Goa Police is yet to find out the identity of a 35-year-old female foreigner whose body was found hanging from the tree at Candolim in North Goa on Saturday. Although police have registered the case as unnatural death, stating that the lady supposed to have committed suicide by hanging herself to a tree.
Since the identity of the deceased is not yet verified police do not have any idea as to where to start the investigation on the case. “Until we establish the identity and nationality of the victim, it will be difficult to probe further. But our efforts are on,” said the Calangute police inspector Santosh Dessai.
The victim is believed to have committed suicide and the police have registered a case of unnatural death. “We have put out the word among the foreigners who are in Goa to ask around if anyone knows about a missing person. We have already contacted the diplomatic missions of the UK and Russia, but have not received a response so far,” Police Inspector Dessai added.
Meanwhile, the initial speculations that the deceased tourist is Russian have brought no results so far as the Russians visiting Goa has given no leads so far of anyone missing from their group.
Advocate Vikram Varma, who represents the Russian consulate, revealed that they are hoping that someone will come forward with the identity of the victim in order that the probe moves further.
According to the report published in the local daily Heraldo, Sources informed that the foreigner is approximately 35-40 years of age. She has shoulder-length straight dark hair and a tattoo on her left hand. She was wearing a dark-colored pant, light-colored sweatshirt and blue sandals.
Saligao PI Santosh Dessai, who is holding additional charge of Calangute Police station, told Herald that foreigner died due to the strangulation. “The lady has committed suicide by hanging herself to a tree. It was an unnatural case of death and the autopsy was conducted on Monday. The reports revealed that death was caused due to hanging. The lady looks like a foreigner but we are yet to identify who she is. We have ruled out any chances of rape or sexual assault. It was a fresh body and we were informed within six hours of her death,” Dessai said.
The Calangute police have informed all the police stations as well as the British and Russian embassies to check if they have any missing cases reported. “Currently we have no details of her nationality. We tried to connect the Russians in Goa and overseas through social media, but nobody has reverted back to us as yet. The moment her identity is confirmed we can get more details. The moment we have any information we would also share it with the police. It may take another 24 hours,” Varma said.
