The setting up of a helicopter plant in Goa is underway and a preliminary assessment by HAL and consultation with his ministry will decide on Goa’s feasibility for setting up a helicopter manufacturing unit informed the defence minister Manohar Parrikar to media on Monday.

The defence minister was talking to media during his two-day visit to Goa. “I have told them to conduct a study and give a preliminary report, they will decide whether it will be a helicopter manufacturing unit or a repair and overhauling facility or some component integration, and get back to me,” Parrikar said.

It may be recalled that soon after taking over the office of defence minster Parrikar had instructed the Bangalore based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to scrutinize if Goa could be made a hub for manufacturing helicopters.

Parrikar further said that the setting up of such kind of facility does not happen overnight; only the preliminary report will decide the fate of helicopter project in Goa.  “I will speed it up. But such things don’t happen overnight…” Parrikar said.
