The newspaper and news channels are supposed to be an eye and ear of the people that it has to be transparent and unbiased but this is the case of Goa’s leading English daily whose managerial team has been involved in the extortion for not to writing bad about their clients. [su_expand more_text=”READ MORE” less_text=” ” height=”0″ hide_less=”yes” link_style=”button” link_align=”center”] According to the news published by the local English daily The Navhind Times, crime branch of Goa police will be investigating the matter of extortion by the of Goa’s leading English daily (not ‘The Navhind Times’) which is accused of allegedly hatching a criminal conspiracy to extort money from commercial entities in the state. The police will also summon the complainant advocate Rajeev Gomes as well as a casino official in connection with the case.

According to the sources, Advocate Rajeev Gomes had filed a complaint at Crime Branch of Goa Police at Ribandar against the English daily on Saturday. In his complaint, Advocate Gomes had requested the police to conduct a transparent inquiry into the video content that is going viral on the social media accusing the newspaper. The sources claim that the video has been recorded using a spy camera in 2015.

The sources have revealed that the Goa Police crime branch has already initiated the process of calling all the people connected with this case. Although the complaint is lodged by the advocate Gomes but the process does not look like going to be as simple because, according to police, first they need to verify the contents of the complaint and ascertain the accusation of extortion. And if they feel it is amounting to the extortion than the preliminary inquiry will be initiated and later the action will be initiated, informed sources.

In the said video the newspaper reprehensive is seen demanding Rs. 25 Lakh worth of advertisement support per month from the casino operator to drop the negative stories pertaining to the said casinos. He is also telling the stories of demanding the similar amount by his senior from other casinos.

“The video clearly reveals the sordid trail of the blackmail and extortion perpetrated by the newspaper against casinos and builders and the nexus between this newspaper and casinos pursuant to a criminal conspiracy of the management, sales and editorial departments, under a threat to publish negative stories of casinos, thereby clearly amounting to offences of criminal intimidation and extortion under the IPC and the same requires thorough investigation,” Gomes had stated in his complaint.

He had further stated that he has filed this complaint in the public interest as the incident has not only tarnished the image of media in Goa but also shaken the faith of the common man in the media, who would be forced to look at the fourth estate as the media mafia.

The time will only tell what kind of inquiry going to get conducted into this issue as both the players in this game are very powerful. The newspaper representative is seen demanding the money for stopping the negative publicity while the casino operator whose face is not seen in the video apparently negotiating the deal asking again and again “are you sure it is 25 lakh per month or per year” “this is too much” “we do not make so much profit” and so on. Please take a look at the video and decide for yourself.
