EDM IN SIMPLE LANGUAGE IS, ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC, THAT BROUGHT A NEW RECOGNITION TO THE STATE OF GOA, WITH THE COMMENCEMENT OF SUNBURN IN THE STATE. IT STARTED WITH ONE FESTIVAL, BUT LATER LED TO MANY OTHER SUCH FESTIVALS INTO THIS SECTOR. FINALLY, THE FORMER TOURISM MINISTER OF GOA PUSHED IT OUT OF THE STATE. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THAT, DUE TO THE ABSENCE OF EDM FESTIVALS, THE TOURISM WENT DECLINING. BUT, BY AND LARGE, IT AFFECTED MANY SMALL AND BIG BUSINESSES IN THE STATE. NOW, THE NEW TOURISM MINISTER WANTS THE EDM FESTIVALS BACK IN GOA, BUT THE LOCAL MLA AND WRD MINISTER IS STRONGLY OPPOSING THE SAME, DUE TO DRUG MENACE. NOW THE QUESTION IS, WILL THE EDM FESTIVAL TAKE PLACE THIS TIME OR NOT???
Everyone in Goa and around the world wants to know the answer to this question as everyone is in the favour of EDM happening in the state. The coastal belts of Goa mainly survive on tourism for business. Unlike other businesses, they cannot substitute for the same.
According to reports, Goa’s WRD Minister has strongly opposed the EDM festivals in Goa as according to him such festivals bring drug menace into the state. He also opposed Sunburn in Goa and said that he will not allow Sunburn in Siolim, as they have already cheated the local government by not paying their dues, said sources.
According to WRD Minister, Vinod Palyekar, the state needs a strong policy for attracting quality tourists in the state. But Pernem MLA and Tourism minister of Goa has another point of view. According to him, the promotion of tourism is not possible without EDM. “We haven’t received any proposals as yet.” said the Tourism Minister Babu Azgaonkar. He also added that he has been putting in all the effort to recover the due amount from them.
“Unless we recover the earlier dues, I am not going to allow anybody to hold the festival in the state, and even when we grant permission, I will make sure that it will be free from drugs. I am completely against drugs, and we do not want tourists who search for drugs in such festivals,” said Babu Azgaonkar.
According to reports, the EDM festivals promote quality tourism in the state. The government had generated around 20 crore revenue from the EDM organizers, but the same people have also fleeced the government of revenue to the tune of Rupees seven crores. Despite that, the tourism minister claims that EDM will be brought back to Goa, but WRD minister Vinod Palyekar is against the decision of Tourism Minister Babu Azgaonkar.
“I am completely against the EDM festivals happening in the state and will not allow them in my constituency.” He also added that the reason behind this is, the CEO of EDM company, Harendra Singh, who owes Goa Government crores of rupees, and besides that, the consumption of the drugs is also very high in these festivals. He also stated that he will make sure that this will not be allowed in his constituency.”
Will the cold war between Tourism and WRD minister put a stop to the EDM festival happening in the state this year again? Please leave your valuable comments and suggestions on this issue.
