Several hundreds of people came on the road in the protest of a deadly accident that took place in Naibag at Pernem in North Goa. The accident was resulted out of the steel plate carrying truck lose control due to an apparent failure in the braking system of the truck causing the death of two youth on the spot and one lost his leg permanently.
The news spread on the social media like a wildfire and people gathered in hundreds of numbers and staged the ruckus on the road by not allowing the police or the fire brigade personnel to do their job. The sources said that the people were angry due to the accident caused out of rash and negligent driving which resulted in the truck lose control causing the death of two youth from Pernem.
According to the sources, the incident of an accident took place on Sunday afternoon on the Goa-Mumbai highway near Naibag junction in Pernem. The sources revealed that the boys were sitting on their bikes while the truck carrying the steel plates apparently being used in the ongoing bridge constructions work, lost control due to apparent break failure resulting into the steel plates hitting the bikes parked on the roadside on which the youth were sitting. Two youth were crushed to death and one of the boy’s leg was chopped off completely.
According to the eyewitness, the truck was apparently in the high speed and when it reached the Naibag junction, due to alleged break failure, lost the control and the steel plates fell on the road crushing two youth to death and one lost a leg permanently.
The huge force of police was deployed at the accident site to control the mob who blocked the road in the protest of an accident. The sources further said that there was total six bike parked on the roadside on which boys were sitting and chatting when the truck came crashing into it. Few of them managed to escape from the accident as they ran for their life but two boys were crushed under the heavy steel plates and died on the spot.
The sources said that this portion of the NH 17 is an accident-prone zone and no control over the speed is applied here which regularly causes an accident.
People blocked the road for more than 4 hours but no government officials dared to visit the accident spot, said the sources. Meanwhile, the local MLA assured the work of protection wall, rumblers which will start from tomorrow and the spot order has been issued in this regards to the Executive Engineer of PWD, said the sources.
There are few more casualties are expected, which is yet to be ascertained and due to the road blockade the same could not be found out by the authorities, said the sources.
