Rape of teenagers and minors is a regular affair in our country. At least one news gets published into the media on daily basis on this issue. The involvement of political leaders and legislatures in this act is not new anymore. In one such recent incident that is being published by most of the newspapers in National media, a 19-year-old Kabaddi player alleged to have been gang-raped by two at the residence of the congress leader. According to the victim girl, two people raped her on the gunpoint at the residence of Congress leader in Khanna on a Wednesday evening. The accused were identified as Avtar Singh and Nirmal Singh, both from Patiala. The congress leader, Shahnaz whose residence has been used for this ghastly act had said to have not even attempted to rescue the victim when she cried out for the help.
According to the sources, in her complaint the 19-year-old circle-level kabaddi player who hails from Batala and studies in Class XII in Chandigarh, narrated the police that the main culprit behind this act is Avtar Kalsana whom she supposedly has known for more than a year. She met Avtar almost one and half year ago upon which he asked her to organize the Kabaddi tournament and since then the accused is in touch with her and that she would talk to him on phone.
According to the victim girl, she got the missed call from accused Avtar on Wednesday and she called him back. The accused told her to come over to Khanna as he wants to introduce her to his parents and then they would also do the Diwali shopping. Accordingly, she boarded the bus and reached Khanna around Wednesday afternoon. “Avtar came to receive her in a car and he told her that he had a sister in Khanna whose name is Shahnaz. He said that he wanted to introduce her to his sister,” the rape survivor told police.
Later, he took the victim girl to Shahnaz’s house in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, where the second accused Nirmal Singh of Mallowal village was already present there. She added that after sipping the tea served by Shahnaz, Avtar took her to the first floor for “showing her house and started touching her inappropriately”. The survivor said that when she resisted him, Avtar took out a pistol and threatened to shoot her. He then overcame and raped her and later his friend Nirmal, who is former sarpanch of his village, also raped her, the girl has told police. Despite was listening to her cries for help, Shahnaz didn’t come to her rescue, she has told police.
Further, the complainant told the police that, later the accused Avtar made her board a bus back to her place and on reaching Sirhind she called her relative Kuldeep Singh who together with her went to the city police station and lodged the complaint on Thursday morning. Khanna SSP Satinder Singh said that the accused were arrested after being booked for rape and criminal conspiracy. The trio was produced in local court which sent Shahnaz to judicial custody whereas gave Avtar Singh and Nirmal Singh on remand to police.
