Based on the story back then in January 1983, the Mac team members led by Jobs went on a retreat. According to original Mac team member Andy Hertzfeld, Jobs opened the retreat with three sayings:-

  1. Real artist’s ship
  2. it’s better to be a pirate than join the navy
  3. Mac in a book by 1986

The second quote “It’s better to be pirates than joining the navy” was meant for the team to have the sense of rebellion and independence and that remains with them till date. According to one of the Apple employees “Steve wanted us to preserve our original spirit even as we were growing more like the Navy every day.” and when the team started growing in the size and moved into the larger premises the team members decided to take the pirates lesson to heart and they decided to demark the territories and fly their own flag above the building.

The pirate flag was designed by the Mac team member Susan Kare, who was responsible for many of the user-interface elements and icons of the original MacOS. She painted the skull and crossbones in the center and placed the rainbow Apple logo as the eyepatch on the flag. According to the sources, the flag Apple is flying above its campus Friday is most certainly not the original pirate flag (that disappeared sometime in 1984 or 1985), but it carries the same imagery of the original.
