Two Delhi Based Persons Arrested by Goa Police For Extorting Money from Saligao Resident

The extortion of money from businessmen is not a new case but what is new here is the involvement of people from the other state. In this case, two Delhi based persons were arrested by the Goa police for extorting money from Saligao Resident. The Calangute police nabbed culprits from Delhi and busted the interstate extortion racket.

The new development has exposed the existence of extortion racket in Goa. According to the report published by Time of India, an inter-state extortion racket was busted by Calangute police with the arrest of two persons in Delhi on February 20. They were brought to Goa on Saturday in connection with a case of extortion registered at the Calangute police station on February 7.     

Calangute PI Jivba Dalvi said they had received a complaint from Ravi Madduri, 38, a resident of Saligao and native of Andhra Pradesh, that on February 5, three unidentified persons wrongfully confined him in an apartment at Calangute, forcefully intoxicated him, and induced him to transfer Rs 5,60,500 to their account by using fear as a motivator.

Following the complaint, Calangute police registered an offense under Sections 342, 328, 384 r/w 34 IPC and started investigations.

Through the mobile call details of the accused, it was found that they were from Delhi and Haryana, and through CCTV footage from various places, it was found that they had left for Delhi from Dabolim airport. A car used by the accused, with UP registration plates, was attached by Calangute police from the Dabolim parking area.

A special investigation team was formed under the supervision of DIG Paramaditya, SP North Chandan Choudhary and PI Dalvi, and a police team was sent to Delhi where, with the assistance of the special cell of Delhi police, the accused were placed under surveillance.

After six days of continuous surveillance, two of the accused, Parveen Dhankar, 24, a resident of Jhajjar, Haryana, and Iqbal Singh, 26, a resident of Ramesh Enclave, Kirari Suleiman Nagar, Delhi, were arrested.

The two accused were produced before the Patiala House court, Delhi, and five days transit remand was obtained.

They were brought to Goa on Saturday and remanded to five days police custody. The search for the third accused is on.

During interrogation in police custody, the two accused confessed to having committed another similar extortion crime at Porvorim on January 22 where another offense under Sections 364-A, 394, 342, 504 r/ w 34 IPC has been registered at the Porvorim police station.

The Calangute police team which apprehended the accused consisted of PSI Prajit Mandrekar, and constables Bhagwan Palyekar, Mahendra Chari and Mahabaleshwar Sawant.
