After the deadly accident at Old Goa in which five people died on the spot and three injured critically the Chief Minister of Goa summoned an urgent meeting of officials to curb the traffic violations in the state. But despite every effort, two more youths lost their lives in the two separate accidents that took place at in South Goa. But the Traffic Police feeling proud about issuing the 900 challans in a single day. Read the complete story here… 

It looks like the control over the traffic violations is judged by the number of challans issued by the traffic police. To curb the violations Goa Police dedicate themselves completely and try to issue as many challans as possible. This helps them on the two-way, one by showing the statistics of curbing of the violations and the second is revenue generation for the government treasury.

The current week has shown a tremendous rise in the road accidents with almost 15 people supposed to have lost their lives in the various road accidents the has been reported in Goa. According to the sources, The spate of fatal road accidents the state has witnessed this week increased by two on Wednesday. The accidents, both of which occurred on the Verna bypass, involved a two wheeler and a bus in one case and a truck and a two wheeler in the other. The accidents claimed one life each. “Both accidents took place on the Seraulim-Utorda road,” Verna police inspector Uday Parab said. The victims were Ahmed Salman, 38, and Aishwarya Salelkar, 17.

POLICE AND SENIOR OFFICIALS AT THE CM RESIDENT URGENT MEETING SUMONED

Meanwhile, the subject of the emergency meeting that was summoned by the CM Parrikar at his official residence was ‘how to tackle the situation of increasing accidents in the state’ and based on that Mr. Parrikar had ordered the traffic police to take strict action against the violators of the traffic rules. The meeting was attended by Dharmendra Sharma, chief secretary/Pr. Secretary (Transport), SP Traffic, director transport and other senior officials.

During the high-level discussions, it was decided to fast track procurement of various items such as surveillance cameras, speed monitoring laser guns, traffic cones and other related uniform and gear, interceptor vehicles etc. for strict implementation of traffic rules. Parrikar had also directed the traffic police to take a strict action on the errant drivers, two-wheeler riders without helmets, a crackdown on drunken driving through the use of Alco-meters which will be procured on a priority basis, over-speeding, rash negligent driving, etc and other motor vehicle offenders.

Based on the instructions from the CM of Goa, the Traffic Police swung the action and issued rampant challans making it reach the mark of 900 challans in just one day. According to the sources, the Goa Traffic Police tightened their vigil at 37 different accident zones in North Goa. The senior officer at the Traffic said that he has given the orders to all the officers to keep a strict vigil on the 37 identified accident-prone zone in the north Goa. “There are two types of zones, first is black spot zone and second is accident prone zone. We have ordered rigorous challenging in these locations to curb the violations,” he said.

The rash and negligent driving, riding without helmets, the absence of traffic sense and stuffing more people than the capacity of the vehicles for the entire menu only one challan is there Rs. 100 and according to the rules if once challan is issued for the day there is no possibility of issuing the second challan for the same of the new offense, said the sources. There is no provision of suspension of license in case of traffic violations and the newly amended traffic rules are not yet applicable in the state of Goa which makes the vehicle owners take the advantage of the situation said the sources.   

Meanwhile, the two accident that took place in the south Goa, Salman, 38, resident of Mardol Verna died on the spot after the private passenger coach collided head on with his bike. According to the sources, the bus dragged the deceased Salman up to several meters before it came ti halt. The Bus was coming from Bengaluru and the driver of the bus is said to have fled from the accident scene. The second accident involved the truck and a two wheeler. According to the sources, Pradeep Salelkar of Colva and his daughter Aishwarya were on their way home when a truck carrying cylinders hit their bike. Aishwarya, who was riding pillion, died on the spot. Pradeep is presently undergoing treatment at the Goa Medical College and hospital, Bambolim.

ONE MORE DIED IN VERNA IN A TWO WHEELER ACCIDENT

This is the existing situation of law and order in the state. The riders are riding their bikes without helmets and in a rash and negligent manners while the police do their job by issuing the challans. Ministers are busy figuring out their next step in their political arena and the accidents are as a usual regular affair in the state. Who is responsible for this?
