In a shocking revelation made by the Peon of the transport department who was arrested by ACB (Anti Corruption Bureau) last month while accepting the bribe of Rs. 1 Lakh, has claimed that he has done the same on the instruction of dy. Director. In his statement recorded under section 164 of CrPC before the magistrate Ram Prabhudesai he told that he accepted the bribe on behest of deputy director Vishram Govekar.

In his statement Gawade (the peon) has stated that Govenkar has instructed him to collect total 5 Lakh from Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector (AMVI) to settle the matter with him which Govenkar, as a vigilant officer of transport department was investigating. According to the sources Gawade had been given 48 hours to think about his statement being recorded and that he has willingly made the statement.

It has to be recalled that the ACB (Anti Corruption Branch) of the directorate of Vigilance had informed that his officials caught red handed a peon posted at the Department of Transport while accepting Rs 1 lakh bribe from an officer from the same department on 29th August morning. The peon was identified as Dattaram alias Damu Gaude.

The peon reportedly said to have sent feelers to the AMVI that his job was in imminent danger and he needed to cough up Rs 5 lakhs as (job) protection money. There are many cases have been reported of the rampant corruption taking place at various RTO offices in Goa by active citizens but not much has been done till date but this case of arrest could prove to be the major breakthrough into those claims.

Govenrkar who is due to retire in another six months time will be summoned for the interrogation is likely to be arrested by ACB however no one has issued any official statement on this. The audio clip, recorded by the complainant in the matter, which also mentions a senior officer’s involvement in corrupt practices, will be sent for forensic analysis to ascertain allegations of corruption. Sources said the recorded evidence would be sent to CBI’s laboratory next week.

It looks like more skeletons will be coming out of closet in this corruption case. Everyone knows and aware of that fact that transport department is one of the well known department for high level of corruptions which includes the facilitation of touts by the department who sits just outside the department offices and makes the work of people easier against the payment of certain fees. Everyone seems to have sealed their lips on this matter as who will tie the ring around the neck of the cat. But when the corruption cases involved the departmental officials itself then it becomes more serious matter. Let’s wait and watch as what turns and twists this bribery case takes. We will keep updating you on this issue time to time. Please do not forget to leave your honest comments on this issue.
