Almost 6 years have been passed since the first release of the statement of “ATALA” the drug mafia from Israel, who was seen speaking about the police and politicians drug nexus on the uploaded u-tube video which has been watched by millions of people in the world and almost entire Goa has seen that video, still the action against the culprits are pending for the lack of proper investigation and non submission of charge-sheet before the courts. There were many premises that had been made by the then government to take the strict action against the culprits?

Atala

Yaniv Benahim alias “Atala” in a blue T-shirt

It’s been over a year since the CBI’s Goa office has completed the investigation into the third case of alleged police-politician-drug mafia nexus, the Atala case, but, it is still waiting to get a nod from the CBI’s Delhi office to file the charge-sheet in the case. It is to be recalled that on September 25, 2013, the CBI completed its investigation into the third and final ‘Atala’ case. CBI investigated the Atala case, where he claimed to sell drugs in Goa’s coastal belt by paying off police from the Anti-narcotics cell (ANC). Atala, alias Yaniv Benaim is better known, as an alleged drug dealer from Israel. Over six years ago, his girlfriend had uploaded a video on a social networking site that showed him claiming that he was paying a ANC ‘chief’, who regularly sold him drugs seized from raids and even drugs deposited with the magistrate.

It led to the arrest and subsequent release on bail of ANC personnel, PI Ashish Shirodkar, head constable Sayesh Pokle, and constables Sheikh Hussain, Sandeep Parab alias ‘Kamin’ and Ramchandra Kankonkar alias ‘Builder’. The name of the former home minister’s son also emerged during the probe. The Atala case, along with the Dudu case and the Gudlar case, make up Goa’s ignominy of cases alleging a nexus between cops, politicians and the drug mafia in the state.

This is not the first case of drug peddling in Goa; according to the information available on 18th October 2013 Goa Police had arrested a British man after their biggest ever drugs seizure, worth 20.5 million rupees ($330,000). The 45-year-old Gary Baird was arrested for illegally possessing more than four kilograms of amphetamine, “The accused had come to deliver the narcotics to a customer,” said police superintendent Karthik Kashyap. Subsequently on December 15, 2013 two people were arrested by the Goa Police near the Vagator beach in Goa for possessing LSD and charas worth Rs.1.03 lakh. Further to add upto this statement released to NDTV on July 22, 2014 by the then chief minister of Goa Shri. Manohar Parriker assuring the crackdown on foreigners staying illegally & carrying out businesses, especially in narcotics in the state, but then what happened?

The renowned Irish rocker Bob Geldof

According to another incident “Bob Geldof” the renowned Irish rocker on his first visit to Goa said, he is happy to be in the Indian state which gave him his best drugs. “I am happy to be in the land which gave me my best drugs,” Geldof said at the beginning of his concert at a ThinkFest conclave at Bambolim village in Goa. Repeating his statement again during the press conference, Geldof, 61, admitted that when he was growing up, the best “stuff” (drugs) came from Goa. “I said I am happy to be in the land which gave me my best drugs,” he said, responding to a question. “When I was growing, the best stuff came from Goa. I know some people sent it, I don’t know who they are. That’s the truth. Goa and drugs were completely one in my head,” Geldof added.

Like this there are many hundreds of incidents which can tell the story of availability of DRUG in Goa that too openly. In the year 2014 there was a case in which a group of teenager school students caught by the Goa Police consuming the drug in the open space. How horrifying is that now? Is there someone to answer to this situation and able to take the responsibility of the same? Will the future of our children breathe in the fear of catching the habit of consuming drugs? Who is the godfather behind this?
