Gambling is not new in Goa and everyone knows about it. The floating Casinos in Mandovi that runs a business without any restrictions and fear are protected by the government under the guise of revenue generation for the state. The Hafta system is in place and every gambling activity including the Matka runs freely under the nose of authorities, but now it looks like the situation is changing. The raid on gambling den conducted by North Goa SP Ms. Chandan Chaudhary has sent the surge of shock amongst the Gamblers and Bookies.

According to the reports published by local news daily Times of India, one of the major raid conducted by the North District Police Squad had exposed of the high profile gambling den situated in Morjim North Goa. The report further states that police managed to recover around 59 lakh worth cash in the raid. Police have also attached 54 mobile phones, a currency counting machine, laptops, and Calculators in the raid.

Around 11 men, including the owner of the premises Reginaldo D’Costa, was arrested by North Goa police and have been sent into the police custody. According to the sources, D’Costa has allegedly has been instrumental in organizing the gambling activities in massive scale by employing bookies.

According to the sources, North Goa SP, Ms. Chandan Chaudhary had planned the raid after she received several complaints about the gambling actives going on in Morjim. “After getting the information of gambling activities in Morjim, I had activated the intelligence in that area and following the confirmation of the same, we planned the raid,” said Chandan Chaudhary.

This raid was highly confidential and no-one was aware of it until the last moment. Ms. Chaudhary took few selected police personnel along with her in the raid. The raid was conducted within hour’s time and caught all the gamblers red-handed, stated the SP.

Addressing to the press conference following the raid Ms. Chaudhary told the media that Matka bookies have connections within the state as well as outside Goa and more details will be surfaced soon, and more Matka dens in the state will be busted soon. She also ruled out the possibility of accused getting bail in this case as she still needs to investigate the source of these gambling activities in the state.

The names of the people arrested in the raid, Reginaldo D’Costa Ankush Parab, Laxmikant Gawde, Gajanan Morje, Pravin Parsekar, Agnel Fernandes, Laxmikant Mhamal, Pratap Salgaonkar, Anthony D’Souza, Vithal Goltekar, and Damodar Govekar. The North district team consisted of PSI Mahesh Gadekar, PSI Anant Gaonkar and police staff Nitin Gaonkar, Caetano Mendonca, Pravin Tulaskar, Rudresh Zantye, Sagar Khorjuvenkar, Madhuri Shetgaonkar, Vinod Naik of district investigation unit, Porvorim, who were part of the raiding team. 

Although this is one of the biggest raids in Goa on the gambling den it is still the tip of the iceberg and until, unless the entire gambling activities, legal as well as illegal gets razed off, the system will have the traces of the gambling decease inside which will further spread across the state.
