SWINE FLU STRIKES BACK IN GOA AND THIS TIME THE DISEASE HAS CAUSED NINE DEATHS IN EIGHT MONTHS

INDIA WITNESSED WORST OUTBREAK OF THE SWINE FLU, RENAMED THE INFLUENZA A(H1N1)PDM09 VIRUS BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO), IN THE PANDEMIC YEARS OF 2009-10 WHEN THE DISEASE AFFECTED CLOSE TO 50,000 PEOPLE AND KILLED MORE THAN 2,700 ACROSS THE COUNTRY. UNFORTUNATELY THE DISEASE HAS HIT AGAIN AND THIS TIME IT HAS TAKEN A TOLL ON THE CITIZENS OF GOA.

As the tests have been conducted, they have confirmed that total of nine people have died already, while another 189 have been tested positive for the H1N1 virus or swine flu in the State since January this year. In 2016, no deaths were reported due to swine flu.

In a shocking statistics provided by the Directorate of Health Services show that since January 1 to September 1, 2017, 707 samples were sent for testing out of which 189 tested positive and there were 9 deaths.

In the previous year, 390 samples were sent for testing of which six tested positive with no deaths reported.

State Epidemiologist, Dr Utkarsh Betodkar said, “Out of the nine deaths two have died only because of swine flu, while others died due to complications along with swine flu, as most had diabetes and other respiratory illness.”

The doctor has identified the high risk category that includes children below age of five and people above 65 years, pregnant women, those suffering from uncontrolled diabetes.

The symptoms of swine flu are very much like those of regular influenza. They include: chills fever, coughing, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting.
