In one of the most shocking Incident that came into the light at Candolim Goa, one Sunita Vernekar was found to be confined to the dark room for the past 20 years. The woman who is in her 50s now had spent 20 years of her life in the dark room located behind her parent’s house in Candolim.
According to the sources, this lady was married to a man from Mumbai 20 years back but she soon returned back home after finding out that the man she married was having an affair with someone else. After returning back to her parent’s house she was put inside the dark room situated in the backyard of her parent’s house by her brother. According to her brother since she was behaving irrationally he only locked her in the room.
She spends 20 years of her life confined in that small dark room without seeing the sunlight. Even the animals are not given this type of treatment today, and in such world, a woman was confined in a small room for 20 years only with the supply of food and water.
“The woman was locked in a dark room of her parent’s house currently occupied by her two brothers and their family members. She was being served food and water through a window,” a senior police official told the media.
According to the sources, that small dark room was her world for the past two decades. When she was rescued by the NGO with the help of Women’s police team she was in an undressed condition. “When the police team entered the room, they found that the woman was naked and was reluctant to move out of the room which is located on the backside of her parent’s house,” the official said, adding she was confined in the dark room for almost 20 years.
After the incident was reported to the Women’s Police Station by an NGO, Bailancho Sad, the team of police comprises of women police raided the place, and rescued the victim who was living in a pathetic condition worse than an animal, said the sources.
The senior police officer attached to Panaji Police Station (Women’s Wing) said that they came to know about the incident following the email received by them from a person who claimed to have seen the woman who was living in the condition more severe than the animal for past 20 years and no one came to know about it.
According to the people of a village, following her (victim) return from Mumbai, the people had not seen her around. The official said the NGO came to know about the woman through an email sent to them by a person who claimed to have seen the woman. “Her family members locked her in the room after she started behaving abnormally after her return from Mumbai,” the official said adding that The woman was taken for medical treatment by the police. “We are yet to arrest anyone in this case. The investigation is still at the primary stage. The statement of family members of the woman is being recorded,” he said.
