According to the sources, she was 85-year-old. The neighbors called the police when they started getting the foul smell from the apartment and that’s when this incident came to the light.
The North Goa Superintendent of Police Umesh Gaonkar told the media that, two days back police received the call from unknown persons from Porvorim informing them about the foul odor emitting from the building in their neighborhood. Immediately Porvorim police reached the spot and broke the apartment door open with the help of fire personnel. According to SP, Gaonkar, when police entered the apartment they found that the suspect was sitting in the dining room and a body of a lady was lying nearby. The accused got violent looking at the police but subsequently, police managed to get hold of him and admitted him at IPHB (Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior) at Bambolim. “We took him to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour, Bambolim, where he is now admitted,” said Gaonkar.
The sources revealed the name of the deceased as Jharna Bahumik, a native of Uttar Pradesh. Police sent the body of Jharna for the postmortem at GMC (Goa Medical College and Hospital) and the report of which revealed that she died due to strangulation.
Goa Police has registered the case of Murder against the son since the prima facie nobody else was in the room and the door was locked from the inside. According to the police sources, the family is originally from UP and settled down in Goa. The deceased have one daughter who stays abroad said the police.
The Porvorim PI, Jivba Dalvi when contacted said that “during the inquiry it was revealed that, the accused 55-year-old, was a chronic alcoholic and is mentally unsound. He also used to assault his aged mother for money. The neighbors were also afraid of him due to his harassment,” he said.
The police have registered the case against son based on the circumstantial evidence, statements on record and autopsy report. “It has been understood that son has committed the crime,” he said.
Mr. Dalvi also mentioned that “Once the accused is declared mentally fit and stable after necessary treatment and can be discharged; he will be formally arrested in this case.”
The body of the deceased is kept in the morgue at GMC as her daughter is aboard is yet to be arrived, Said the police sources.
