Social Activist Deepak Gadekar Attempts Suicide in Police Custody, Claims of Paying over a Lac to Police Inspector

Deepak Gadekar is one of the prime accused arrested in the alleged dacoity case of 10 lac rupees involving a Magaluru based businessman Karthick Kotiyan. According to the sources, Deepak Gadekar had attempted suicide in the police custody. It may be recalled that Social activist Deepak Gadekar and two constables Keshav Naik and Mahendra Mandrekar attached to the Calangute police station were arrested on Saturday on charges of criminal conspiracy and dacoity and had been remanded in police custody for ten days.    

The news of broad daylight dacoity with the involvement of police personnel came as a shocker to the police department. According to the sources, 10 lac rupees in the new currency notes had been robbed by the trio from the Kerala-based businessman on the pretext of exchanging the old currency worth Rs. 16 lacs. The incident took place in Calangute in the last week. All the accused had been arrested by Calangute police and send into the custody. During the process of investigation, Calangute police managed to recover only Rs. 1.26 lacs from the possession of accused, said the sources.

The sources have revealed that Gadekar tried a suicide attempt out of frustration. The attempt of suicide took place in the police custody on Wednesday night, said the sources. Gadekar was immediately shifted to GMC (Goa Medical College and Hospitals) for treatment and later he was referred to the IPHB (Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour), Bambolim on the grounds of “mental illness” where he was declared mentally fit by the doctors and shifted back into the police custody, said the sources.

The sources have also revealed that, during the course of the investigation, Gadekar had told the police that he has paid over Rs. 1 lac to a police inspector but the name of the officer had not been revealed by the sources. Meanwhile, as the case had been referred to the Crime Branch for further investigations. The crime branch officer questioned two police personnel attached to Porvorim police station about the alleged cheating case, involving Mangaluru-based businessman Karthick Kottiyayan.

Based the police FIR report, the complaint, Gadekar had contacted a Mangalore-based businessman Karthik Kotian through a common friend proposing a deal to exchange old currency notes worth Rs 16 lakh belonging to Gadekar for new notes worth Rs 10 lakh from Kotian. Kotian agreed to this and a meeting was fixed on Dec 1 in Goa. At the scheduled moment, Gadekar arrived at the spot along with five accomplices, two of whom were constables Keshav Naik and Mahendra Mandrekar, in a car along with two other associates on a scooter. Gadekar asked the complainant to show the currency so that he could verify the amount. When Kotian showed him the bag, Gadekar, with the help of his constable friends, snatched the bag in an attempt to stage a currency seizure. Following this, a scuffle broke out in which Kotian was assaulted by Gadekar and his accomplices.  On Saturday, Calangute Police arrested all the three accused on charges of criminal conspiracy and dacoity.


Speaking to TOI crime branch SP Karthik Kashyap said that PSI Vishwajit Chodenkar and PC Prashant Chopdekar were questioned in the case.
