In a shocking incident that occurred on Thursday evening, a youth from loutolim shot dead a teenage girl from Marcaim, Goa, before shooting himself. Sujata Gokuldas Naik, a 19-year-old FYBA student from Khandola government college was allegedly shot dead by Nikhil Kumar; 19 years old, a native from Bihar at her residence in Ladewada, Marcaim, Ponda district. This has brought back the memories of an earlier killing, wherein a young girl returning home after work at Marcaim Industrial Estate was shot by unknown persons some years back. According to the sources, South Goa SP Shekhar Prabhudesai said, Kumar came at Naik’s house looking for her. After her mother informed him that she was not at home, he left. At that time the victim’s mother and grandmother were at home. Kumar returned 15 minutes later. On seeing him, the girl rushed to the first floor of the house but the boy spotted her. He ran after her on the first floor and asked her to follow him at the gun point. The mother tried to intervene, but Kumar shot her in the hand and dragged the victim to the ground floor where he shot her in the chest killing her instantly. Kumar then attempts suicide by shooting himself in the stomach.
Sources said that Nikhil Kumar’s father works as a security guard, and he brought his father’s service gun. It is learned that she is the only daughter of her parents and her father was not at home when the murder took place. Police are yet to determine the motive behind the murder and are investigating whether it was a love affair or any other matter or even a one-sided love.
According to the sources, it is known that Kumar lives in Loutolim where some of the girl’s relatives also reside. Kumar may have met her while she was visiting her relatives.
Police took the accused to the Sub District Hospital first and then later shifted him to the Goa Medical College and Hospital; Doctors said that the condition of the accused is serious. Police are waiting for the condition of the accused to stabilize before taking his statement. Police are yet to ascertain the exact motive behind the crime.
