As reported by the PTI a senior police officer investigating the matter of rape case of minor in Goa on Monday submitted before the local court that he was not a part of “leaking” information to media pertaining to the investigation of a rape case which involving Taleigao strongman Babush Monseratte. Investigation agencies were guided to restrain from leaking any facts about this case into the media. The officer has stated that there are many “stake-holders” in the case who also have access to the information and he is not a part of it. Read the report here.
[su_expand more_text=”READ MORE” less_text=” ” height=”0″ hide_less=”yes” link_style=”button” link_align=”center”] Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Karthik Kashyap said in a written statement filed before the court, “Certain newspapers have been publishing false and wrong information of incident/investigation.”
The reply came from Mr. Kashyap was days after the court directed him to submit a written explanation on the “leaks” to the media with regards to the case of human trafficking and rape registered against expelled Congress MLA Atanasio Monserratte. Monserratte is accused of buying and raping a 16-year-old girl in March.
The officer was then asked to give his explanation before Principal District and Sessions Judge B P Deshpande by Monday.
The officer said, “As alleged by the applicant/accused, the investigating authorities have disclosed the details of the investigation. I would like to submit that I have not disclosed any details of the investigation to any print media or electronic media pertaining to the above crime.”
The reply given by the officer stated, “All briefing to the media has been general in nature and nothing in detail as alleged by the applicant/accused.”
Mr. Kashyap explained that there are many stake-holders connected to the case like “the victim assistant unit, members of child welfare committees, the staff of Apna Ghar, medical officers of GMC, the staff of court, certain witnesses, defense lawyer and public prosecutor”.
He then added, “All the above have complete or certain knowledge of the details of the complaint given by the victim and hence they are in a position to disclose certain factual details regarding the incident and the case.”
This was last week when Defence lawyer Saresh Lotlikar passed an application asking to restrain police from revealing information about the case to media.
Advocate Rajiv Gomes, who also represented Mr. Monserratte along with Mr. Lotlikar, had submitted to the court the statement given by the victim to the police that was printed as it is in the media.
