In one of the most tragic incident, more than 50 people said to have drowned due to the collapse of a footbridge situated at Curchorem – Sanvordem in South Goa. The bridge that was connecting Curchorem to Savordem was built by the Portuguese and due to its deteriorated condition it was not in the use and people of the village were using it as a foot bridge.

According to the reports published by the PTI, more than 50 people supposed to have fallen into the Mandovi River after the collapse of the foot bridge at Sanvordem in South Goa. According to the sources, the people were gathered on the footbridge in the bid to see the suicide bid by a youth who supposed to have jumped from the bridge into the Mandovi River.

The bridge supposes to have collapsed due to the overload of the people gathered on the bridge overlooking the rescue operation carried by the fire brigade personnel. The suicide bid is said to have attempted by one of the youth. Around 50 people fell into Mandovi river at Curchorem village in Goa on Thursday evening as a dilapidated Portuguese-era bridge collapsed. (PTI)

The sources further said that the bridge caved in when the emergency fire service personnel were in process of rescuing of the youth who suppose to have jumped from the bridge into the Mandovi river flowing bellow the bridge. “A huge crowd of people had gathered on the bridge to watch the rescue operation, and 50 of them fell into the river as it collapsed,” a police official said.

The sources have further said that some of the people managed to swim across and save themselves but rest are feared drowned in the river. The actual figure will only come out once the rescue operation is over, said the sources. The Fire And Emergency Services personnel started searching for others. Further details are awaited.
