For those who don’t remember, in December 2012, Nirbhaya was beaten with iron rods, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus while she was traveling with her boyfriend. As a result of her assault and subsequent death, new laws and new fast-track courts were promised. More women are now willing to report rape cases. But even two years after Nirbhaya, it seems that the promises of reform were unmet and that the law in India has failed to give justice to women who have been sexually assaulted. A day after in Bareilly a 10 year old girl was found gang-raped and brutally murdered, her hands and head chopped off and her body was recovered from her neighbor’s house, it has emerged that the prime accused, 22-year-old Saleem alias Chhotu, had spent four years in jail for raping an eight-year-old in 2012 and had come to prison recently.

The macabre incident led to an uproar in the locality in Bareilly’s Kamari tehsil when the prime accuser’s father was found sitting on a cot with the girl’s disfigured body , covered in a cloth, lying underneath. Police have arrested the accuser’s father and his wife while Saleem and his cousin Junaid are still on the run. All the four have been booked under the National Security Act and other sections of the IPC.
According to the sources, the Police said that the victim was a student of class 2 and had gone out on Sunday to buy a notebook. Kameri police station house officer Laxmi Shankar said, “The girl’s mother had said she saw Saleem, his father, and Junaid, packing her daughter’s body parts in plastic bags.”
As soon as the word spread, a crowd broke into the horror house and found Saleem’s father sitting on the cot with the girl’s body.
Father of a “rapist” offers a bargain. Father of a man in Bareilly accused of raping a teen, who is now 33 weeks pregnant, said that he will accept her and her child if a DNA test confirms the baby is his son’s. He added that if the girl refuses to marry his son, he will not accept them. The 16-year-old was denied permission by the court to abort the fetus.
Crimes in India will get worse, not better. Things will not get better unless there is an international outcry against the government regarding the law in India.
