Five passengers were trapped in the mangled wreckage of an Interstate bus and a Petroleum Tanker which had a head on collision at Pernem on Mumbai – Goa National Highway NH 17. The sources have said that the bus was proceeding in the wrong direction when it met with an accident. The Accident took place on the Friday morning 7.30am at Pernem, Goa.
Based on the information available from the reliable sources, a Poona – Goa-bound Luxury Bus had met with an accident at Pernem on Mumbai – Goa highway, NH17 on a Friday morning. According to the sources, the driver of the ill-fated bus was proceeding in the wrong direction and rammed into the petrol tanker coming from the opposite direction. The Impact was so high that the front portion of both the vehicles completely got crashed resulting into the trapping of five people into the wreckages of the Bus and Tanker.
The Pernem police have told the media that, the accident between the Maharashtra registered Sleeper Coach which was coming from Pune and proceeding towards the Panaji had met with an accident at Pernem, NH 17, Mumbai – Goa national highway. According to the police, the incident took place at around 7.30 in the morning on Friday. The Tempo was proceeding from Goa to Mumbai when it had a head on collision with the bus.
According to the sources, an accident was the outcome of a Bus driver’s mistake who proceeded in the wrong direction to overtake another vehicle and rammed into the petrol tanker coming from the opposite direction. The impact was so high that the front portion of both the vehicles was smashed resulting in passengers getting trapped in the wreckage. The sources said that three passengers were trapped inside the bus while two persons were trapped in the tanker.
The Pernem police said that besides the one who had been trapped inside the wreckage rest of the passengers of the bus escaped unhurt. The Fire Tenders were summoned to remove the trapped people from the wreckages of the Bus and Tanker, said the sources. The Fire Services Personnel had to make use of the hydraulic tools to cut through the managed vehicles to rescue the trapped people inside. The rescue team managed to save the life of all the five people trapped inside the wreckage of the mangled vehicles said the sources.
Tanker driver Maganlal sustained simple injuries to his face and tanker cleaner Virendra Kumar, 23, sustained fractures to both legs. He was admitted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim. Bus driver Kanahyalal Gujjar fled from the accident site. Bus cleaner Bannalal Gujjar, 32, fractured his left leg and is also admitted to the GMC. Two bus passengers Sushant Thakur, 30, a resident of Banda in Maharashtra and Dhananjay Kerkar, 51, a resident of Pune, Maharashtra, suffered simple injuries and were discharged from the hospital after medical treatment.
“A bigger disaster was averted as the tanker which is used to transport highly inflammable substances was empty. Beside fracture injuries, no serious injuries were reported in the accident,” Pernem PI Sanjay Dalvi said. Police added that the bus driver suffered injuries and has been admitted to a hospital and will be arrested after investigations. The rescue team comprised P N Mandrekar, R A Gawas, V D Gaonkar, Lakshadeep Harmalkar, Vishant Vaigankar and Vithal Parab.
