India is perhaps the only country having very high crime rate against the women. It’s more than 2 years since the shameful incident took place in capital of India the great Delhi and criminals are still having their good time in the jail at the cost of government, the appeal is filed by the defense layers of the accused in the Supreme Court and decision is pending. Thanks to the documentary India’s Daughter by British film-maker Leslee Udwin, the subject of sexual violence and attitudes towards women in India is back in the national headlines. Over two years ago, when the rape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in Delhi on December 16, 2012, shook the nation’s conscience, the Union government set up a committee to amend criminal laws pertaining to sexual violence in India.
The International women’s day has been celebrated across the world to give due respect to all the women in the world. While speaking on occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has criticized crimes against women, saying “our heads hang in shame”, and announced that the government is setting up ‘One-Stop-Centres’ besides a helpline for those facing violence, abuse or harassment. “I salute the indomitable courage and stellar achievements of women. Today, we renew our pledge to make women an equal and integral part of our development journey,” he said in a statement. “Our heads hang in shame when we hear of instances of crime against women. We must walk shoulder-to-shoulder to end all forms of discrimination or injustice against women,” he said.
Mr. Modi said the government is setting up ‘One-Stop-Centres’ that will provide assistance, legal advice and psychological counseling to women who face violence or abuse. The government is also commencing a mobile helpline to enable women to dial 181 for access to counseling and referral services. He said his government has initiated several measures aimed at bringing about a positive change in the lives of women. “That is central to our vision of India’s progress and a life of dignity and opportunity for all our citizens,” the Mr Modi said and appealed to all for support in “transforming our vision into reality”.
On this occasion referring to the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ Yojana, he said it seeks to usher in a paradigm shift in attitudes towards the girl child and places emphasis on educating the girl child. The Sukanya Samruddhi Yojana will provide support for marriage and education of young women. MUDRA Bank will help thousands of women achieve financial independence.
The Union Budget which has been presented recently unveils broad based social security schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Bima Yojana and Atal Pension Yojana. “These will benefit women in a big way,” he added.
Hopefully under the regulations of the new government the India may see the new light of hope for the girl child and women in time to come, but till then we need to educate the society to reduce the crime against the girl child and women in our country and that is only possible with transparency in the law and judiciary system of India towards the benefits of women.
