After the provoking statement made by one of the cabinet ministers in the BJP-led coalition Government against the Lamanis in Goa, now the CM made an announcement in the media that his government will provide the housing to the migrants and slum dwellers of Zuartinagar.

On the one side Goa’s Tourism Minister is taking steps to evacuate the migrant Lamanis from Goan beaches and on the other side, the Chief Minister of Goa is making the announcement of providing the housing facilities to the Zuarinagar slum dwellers. Most of the slum dwellers in Zuarinagar are migrants.

The scheme falls under the central government housing for all scheme. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Sunday said that the state government intends to use central government scheme to provide proper housing facilities to the poor who have been living under shanties in Zuarinagar slums as these people will be given flats at a subsidized cost. “Under various schemes of Government of India, one scheme is “Own Your House’. He further added that “Lots of subsidies is available from central government, it will be coupled by some subsidy from state government, but basically, the idea is to convert shanties in slums into developed structures. It will take lesser space, plus the area will be cleaned, more open and green area will be left, so we had promised for rehabilitation and the same will be fulfilled in days to come” Parrikar told.

Meanwhile, commenting on the state government’s plans to resolve existing issue of garbage faced by several panchayats in Mormugao taluka as well as Mormugao Municipal Council, Parrikar said, “Solid Waste Management Corporation has been formed, next week the newly-formed core team will sit and will be officially taking the responsibility of garbage situation across Goa. All sorts of waste including e-waste, construction debris, hazardous waste, bio-medical waste etc will be mapped. By doing this, we would speed up the process in one or two places. In next, two to three months, corporation will have actual data of how much garbage is generated by each municipality or panchayat and present current system followed by them to disposed of their waste” he said.

The new development may bring some relief to the migrants staying in Goa and protesting due to the statement made by the tourism minister of Goa. The migrants are the major pillars of the development process in the state since they constitute the major part of labor community in the state without which most of the construction companies in the state would close down.
