According to the sources, Ashpaq Abbass Bengre was attacked with a sharp weapon by a fellow inmate at around 9 AM when he was being brought out of the jail to be taken to court in connection with a case, said the sources in PTI. “He was immediately taken to Goa Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead,” he said.
According to the sources from the Colvale jail, this incident took place at the cell no. 8 when one of the inmates Vinayak Karbotkar attacked Ashpak with the chopper. The reason behind the murder is not yet known as the matter is under investigation. The accused of murder Vinayak is said to have been absconding after commenting on the murder of Ashpak and police is in search of him, said the sources.
When media contacted the Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes he denied saying anything in the matter since the matter is under investigation but according to him this is the case of a fight between two inmates which resulted in the death of one. Elvis rushed to the Colvale to take the stock of the situation.
Ashpak Bengre is a history-sheeter involved in a couple of dozens of cases including murder, extortion and other criminal activities were serving the term in the various jail of Goa. According to the available information from the reliable sources, Ashpak started his criminal activities since 1996 when he was just 21 years old and from there on he never looked back. He has been kept in various prisons in Goa and also acquitted by the court in many cases.
He was presently facing the charges of murder, extortion and drug peddling and was kept in Colvale jail. Today Ashpak was supposing appear before the magistrate for the hearing of the drug peddling case when this incident took place, said the sources.
