Supersonic jets are soon going to be back and will shorten the travel time by more than half, no jet lags and no more missing out on family time. The concept is being reintroduced by a start up called Boom. The latest in aviation claims to be more affordable than its predecessor, Concorde. The jet is being built by renowned aeronautical engineers and space specialists with years of experience. The prototype is being put together at a Colorado hangar under the command of former Amazon executive Blake Scholl.

With a normal jet engine, the plane’s weight has been brought down by making the body out of carbon fibre composite and reducing the seats to just 40 by arranging single seat rows on both the sides. The jet will fly at a height of 60,000 feet and the passengers would be able to view the curvature of the earth.

The biggest business provider has been the Virgin airlines ordering 10 of such jets which should be available by next year end. The cost of the flight will be that of a business class around $5000 (INR 3.34 Lakh) making the journey from London to New York in 3.4hrs, Sydney to Los Angeles in 6 hours, Tokyo to San Francisco in 4.7 hrs. There are around 500 routes that the jet can frequent. The same distance from Mumbai to New York will be covered in 4.5hrs, making the idea of living in one city and working in the other quite possible. Though more affordable than Concorde the Boom is still expensive for the general public.

With many more supersonic concepts like Antipode and Hyperlink undergoing development in various parts of the world, the supersonic travel is going to make a major come back.
