There is no dearth of doctors in India, but not many of them specialize in a field far from the regular health issues. Dr Ashwin Dhanraj Porwal is, in that sense, a pioneer and a true visionary. After completing his M.B.B.S. from BJ Medical College, Pune, Dr Porwal took up the study of Proctology, a branch of medicine that deals with ailments of the rectum and anal region.

Although a major source of concern for the Indian population, this field has so far not been given enough importance. But Dr Porwal decided to change that. With this objective, Dr Porwal trained extensively under renowned colorectal surgeon Dr Antonio Longo from Italy and attained a Diploma in Proctology. He is an MBBS graduate from the esteemed B.J. Medical College, Pune and did a post-graduation (D.N.B.) in General Surgery from Poona Hospital and Research Centre.

Dr Porwal returned to India and in 2008 launched his dream project, Healing Hands – the country’s first Proctology clinic in Pune. His vision and able leadership together with the adoption of world-class techniques, enhanced by extensive research have all helped Healing Hands evolve into an ISO certified super-specialty clinic.

Dr Porwal’s proficiency at proctologic surgery made him achieve quite a few ‘firsts’ in the field of medicine in India. He was the first surgeon in Maharashtra to have performed the S.T.A.R.R or Stapled Trans-Anal Rectal Resection Surgery for treating chronic constipation in 2009. Over the years, he went on to perform the most number of S.T.A.R.R. surgeries per month in Asia. He was also the first surgeon in India to use Leonardo laser to remove unwanted hemorrhoidal tissues. More commonly known as Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty, the procedure has been performed the most number of times by Dr Porwal at the Healing Hands Clinic, Pune. In his decade-old career, Dr Porwal has served more than 40,000 patients with anorectal disorders.

Dr Porwal is also known to be the first Indian surgeon to have successfully executed the P.O.P.S surgery for pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence in female patients. He has devised his own technique to treat complex fistula known as Distal Laser Proximal Ligation (DLPL). A member of the Key Opinion Leader (KOL) Organization for Antibiotics and Antibiotics Resistance, Dr. Ashwin Porwal has contributed as the principal investigator for a large number of clinical research work on antibiotic medicines for various ailments.

A pioneer in his field of medicine, Dr Porwal has already been awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Excellence in Healthcare in 2015 for his contribution to the medical and health sector within the first 10 years of his career. He has been a beacon of hope for proctology patients in India and his contributions to this field of medicine are sure to have long standing implications across the globe.
