THE SCHOOL BUILDING IS IN DILAPIDATED CONDITION AND FEELS LIKE WILL FALL AT ANY MOMENT. THE LIFE OF 700 STUDENTS IS ON HIGH RISK, WHERE THE DISASTER IS JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN. THE BEAMS OF BUILDING IS GETTING RIPPED OFF WITH METAL STRUCTURE VISIBLE DUE TO PEELING UP OF THE CONCRETE, AND IT CAN GIVE WAY ANY MOMENT. BUT WILL THE GOA GOVERNMENT WAKE UP BEFORE THE MAJOR DISASTER TAKES PLACE?

The former headmaster of the school has endorsed the fact that, the building is in very poor condition, and it has been that way for a long time now. The lives of 700 students are at risk and have been that way for a long time. According to the sources, Mangor Govt High School building is on the verge of collapsing. The walls have become frail and weak over the years. The dreadful situation is very much clear, in regards to how damaged the building has become.

According to the reports, the ex-college principal, said that the building from the beginning has not been so strong, he further spoke about how the walls have been only layered with cement, and that it does not have any sort-of strong base, as the mix contains mud majorly. The state of the floors are no good either, and over the course of 20 years since the building had been constructed, it is quite clear that it is a disaster waiting to happen.

The ex-headmaster said they had served several notices on the Municipal Corporation regarding the dilapidated buildings – which had been declared vulnerable after various surveys – for voluntarily vacating and demolishing the structures, but no action was taken so far.

One of the officials responded that the notice has been put up to vacate 6 classrooms, in the high school regarding the Urdu and Marathi medium. A letter has been sent to the director to shift to one of the main buildings in Vasco. We only hope the director acts in this dire situation quickly, for sake of the safety of the 700 students.

Mr. Carlos Almeida, the MLA of Vasco, reportedly said that he has raised this issue in the assembly, regarding the repairs, and they have also received a response that the issue will be looked into, and repairs will be made immediately. He also added “Now that the work has started, it is also brought to my notice, that the labor work has been done where the classes are being conducted. I will be calling a meeting immediately, regarding this issue in the next 2-3 days. And I will ask them to shift the students temporarily, for the next few months, to some schools where the classes are being held in the morning. The safety of the students is our priority.”

Locals said the government agencies should work in coordination to ensure public safety. Except for cases which are under litigation, the civic body and the district administration should jointly intervene and see that demolition of this old building rickety buildings is done at the earliest or at least see that the building is fixed. Why wait for a tragedy?
