In one of the shocking and yet amusing case a 75-year-old man was caught by the old Goa police for stealing the cash from the Basilica of Bom Jesus church in Old Goa. In the Basilica church premises the relic of St. Francis Xavier (also known as Goencho Saib) has been kept for exposition. This may be the first such case that occurred in the old Goa church. [su_expand more_text=”READ MORE” less_text=” ” height=”0″ hide_less=”yes” link_style=”button” link_align=”center”] According to the news published by the national news agency PTI, a 75-year-old man from Chennai was arrested by the Old Goa police for stealing the cash of Rs. 50,000 from the donation box of Basilica Church at Old Goa. Basilica of Bom Jesus is one of the Heritage Monuments situated at the Old Goa.
According to the sources, John Louis was on his trip to Goa and he visited the church at Old Goa and while on his visit he apparently got an access to the donation box and managed to remove the cash of Rs. 50,000. The incident was recorded on the CCTV cameras installed in the church premises and the same was witnessed by the church authorities.
Old Goa police were later informed by the church authorities who arrested the accused for stealing the cash from donation box of the church.
The Basilica is a home for relics of St Francis Xavier, whose body is kept for exposition once in ten years. Fr Savio Barretto, the parish priest at the church, lodged a complaint yesterday.
As per the complaint, the accused was caught on CCTV while stealing the cash and after that, the church authorities informed the police. A case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered in this regard and investigations are underway, the officer added.
