In a small Rajasthan village is a man who claims to have made a car that drives itself. Govind Gehlot a 25 year old welder has made his dreams come true. The son of a farmer, and a class 7 drop out is obsessed with the idea of a remote controlled car, “I get ideas when I sleep and then I can’t sleep before I have worked on them,” says the young man. He works in his welding shop and makes a mere Rs.6000/- a month. Most of which he spends on his invention. He stays away from his family to build the car of his dreams. He goes home twice a month to meet his wife and children.

People in the village considered him mad, as he started to dismantle the newly purchased car, which let him to work on the car only during the night time. He spent three months of his earnings to buy a contraption which was placed in the space made by removing the driver’s seat. The contraption looks like a mesh of wires and iron plates. He uses two mobile phones, one for steering and the other for pedals. The other two mobile phones are used by him to control the car by pressing 1 for left and 3 for turning right, while the second one is used to press the clutch, brake and accelerator pedals. The car only runs in the first gear.

The inventor has not yet been able to run the car out of his sight, as the images from the phone in the car are sent to the one in his hand with a lag time of 3 seconds. He says when the 4G connectivity is made available in his village he would be able to run the car anywhere he wanted. He got the idea of a remote controlled car from a Google experiment, “I can’t afford a satellite etc but I have an alternative idea – to work with mobile phone signals,” he says. This is not the only invention he has worked on, earlier he bought a second hand motorcycle and used its engine to make a flying chair. He managed to make it levitate around three feet above the ground but couldn’t maintain its balance and gave up the idea.

Gehlot also made a rotating house of 4 feet by 8 feet size on top of a tree but it got destroyed in a thunderstorm. For almost a month now the car has been parked outside his house, waiting to get a license to drive it on the roads. He wishes that the news of his invention reaches the Prime Minister’s Office and he receives some funding “I will then shut my welding business and work fulltime on engineering my ideas.” He added. [/su_expand]
