The following action is taken in accordance with the order issued by NGT (National Green Tribunal) to take the strict action against the illegal and unauthorized construction of temporary structures close to the beach.

The sources have revealed that the cleanup drive initiated by the GCZMA (Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority) to erase the illegal structures such as Shacks, Huts, and Cottages that is operating in the CRZ without the proper guidelines and licenses. The GCZMA has issued the strict notice that these structures will be demolished without any further notices.

It has also resolved to direct all coastal village panchayats, municipalities and block development officers (BDOs) to identify such structures and submit a compliance report as soon as possible, a GCZMA official said. The GCZMA had written to state tourism department last week to cancel its licenses of such shacks, huts, and cottages and also asked electricity and PWD departments to immediately disconnect power and water supply connections to these, an official said.

Moreover, the Directorate of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also been asked to cancel or revoke the licenses issued to all such illegal structures, the official said. The authority has swung into action after National Green Tribunal (NGT) during the hearing of a case ordered it to take action against illegal or unauthorized construction of temporary, seasonal structures, shacks, huts, and cottages.

According to the sources, the NGT, in its order issued on February 9 this year, had directed GCZMA to revoke all the permissions granted by them in the CRZ areas within a week. The failure of the authority to act had forced the petitioner to file a contempt, wherein NGT issued a notice to them seeking their explanation.

There are several complaints of the local citizens about the enrichments of the beaches in Goa by the shack owners. There are numerous cases registered in various police stations about the obstructions that are being created by the illegal shacks on the beaches of Goa. But no strict action has been initiated till date but now it looks like as if the authorities have decided to take some concrete steps to stop further encroachments. But will that be an easy task for the authorities? Since the shack, owners complain about the dipping business. Please do share your valuable feedback on this issue.
