The most controversial Ashpak Bengre murder case has taken a new turn with the decision of IGP Prisons to take the action against jail staff after the internal inquiry report. Ashpak was murdered right inside the prison which has amounted to custodial death and it became the matter of custodial security of inmates. What came up in the internal inquiry? [su_expand more_text=”READ MORE” less_text=” ” height=”0″ hide_less=”yes” link_style=”button” link_align=”center”] Based on the information available from the reliable sources, the IGP (Inspector General of Police) Prisons decided to take action against jail staff in the Bengre murder case, claimed the sources. This decision has been taken by the senior official based on examination of the internal inquiry report which was submitted by the jail investigation agency on Friday evening.

It may be recalled that Ashpak Bengre a history-sheeter who was recently shifted from Gurgaon on transfer warrant to Colvale jail in Goa. Ashpak was facing trial in an attempt to murder case. later he was attacked by another history sheeter Vinayak Karbotkar who is also facing various charges and was recently shifted to Colvale jail from Pune on a transfer warrant.

Ashpak was killed inside the jail by Karbotkar with the sharp weapon under the complete security and CCTV surveillance system existing in the jail premises. On that fateful day, the Ashpak was getting ready to go to the court for hearing when the accused came with the sharp weapon and attacked the victim from behind causing grievous injuries resulting into the instant death of the victim Ashpak Bengre.

Following the attack police produced the accused before the magistrate for the remand. Crime branch did the interrogation of accused Karbotkar wherein he told the crime branch officials that this murder was made to settle an old score. Following that the judicial inquiry was initiated into the killing of Ashpak by the chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Panaji. Meanwhile, the inquiry is underway, and IGP Elvis Gomes had ordered the jail superintendent to conduct an internal inquiry into the incident. Gomes, when contacted on Sunday, told the media that the report was submitted on Friday evening, but that they are yet to examine it. “Action will be taken after going through the report,” he said.

After the custodial murder of Ashpak Bengre, the entire jail administration has come under the purview of inquiry. The questions have been raised as to how the accused got hold of a weapon to attack Bengre. The post-mortem report stated that he was killed with a sharp-edged weapon, and jail staff likely helped the accused to commit the crime. There have also been reports that the accused was assaulted by the victim twice before the incident. Karbotkar, in his police statement, said that he allegedly killed Bengre as revenge, said a source. The crime branch is yet to retrieve the murder weapon.
