The reason behind the suicide of this budding Footballer remains the mystery. He was just 21 and a promising player, a midfielder, playing for Sporting Club de Goa. The news of Averistho Fernandes commenting suicide spread like a fire in the state and no one knows the reason behind this drastic step taken by the deceased…

According to the reports, Averistho Fernandes come back from the New Year’s Party Celebration and went to sleep in his bedroom by latching the door from inside. The next morning when his parents went to wake him up he did not respond, and the door was locked from the inside. Finding something unusual they raised an alarm and peeped in from the windows only to find out that the young lad was hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom.

The family reported that Averistho Fernandes came around 4 am from the New Year Party which he supposedly went to celebrate with his friends. “Family members said he had returned from a New Year party around 4 am,” said inspector Santosh Desai. He latched the door of his bedroom from inside and hanged himself, the police officer said.     

“When he didn’t open the door in the morning, the family members peeped in from the window and found him hanging,” Mr Desai said. Police were conducting the further probe, he added.  His body had to be removed by breaking open a window. The cause of the death is not yet known, said Inspector Santosh S. Dessai of Saligao Police Station.

The CEO of Sporting Club de Goa Mr. Victor Fernandes said that he was the very nice boy.  “I can only confirm that it is a suspected case of suicide. He was a very nice boy. In fact, he was very normal among his friends and also attended the midnight (New Year’s) mass.”  

The coach of the Sporting Club of Goa also supported the statement of CEO saying that “He was a good player. He played in the Goa League last season and was one of our main players for the upcoming season too.”        

Avaristho had played for Sporting in under-15 age group. He then joined the SESA Football Academy for three years before returning to Sporting as an under-20 player. The young midfielder was known for his good technique and passing and shooting ability. He had represented Goa in the U-16 BC Roy National Tournament in 2010-2011.      

The Goal reported that While reasons for the youngster to take such a drastic action are unknown, one is reminded of an extremely tragic news from 2006 when former India captain VP Sathyan committed suicide by jumping in front of a train over financial difficulties.  

Elvis Gomes, president of the Goa Football Association, expressed shock at the young footballer’s death. “It is a great loss for Goa. He was a most promising and talented player who could have made it to the national squad,” Mr. Gomes said.
