Goa’s first coin operated water vending machine was installed at a market in Sankhali-Goa, near the bus stand for providing clean and hygienic water for the people of Sankhali at a reasonable price. People can now get a glass of pure room temperature drinking water by inserting a coin of Rs 1 and coin of Rs 2 for cold water.
Water ATM needs water and electricity that’s why this ATM is installed near the bus stand with the help of Sankhali village council. 50% of income generated by the income will go to the temple and 50% will go for the maintenance of the water ATM.
According to the sources, the innovative machine is made by Aqua Kraft and sponsored by ACGL (Automobile Corporation of Goa Limited). Water ATM was inaugurated this morning by opposition leader Pratapsingh Rane in the presence of Shrinivas Dempo, ACGL chairman, O.B. Ajay, Aqua Kraft chairman, Dharmesh Sanghani, Chairperson of Sankhali Municipal council.
Water pollution in Goa is primarily associated with unmanaged urbanization, population explosion, inadequate capacity of sewage treatment and its disposal which leads to unhygienic and unsanitary conditions. People below the poverty line in Goa are unable to acquire clean and hygienic water as they are not able to afford water filters in their homes.
Installation of water ATM at Sankhali should also boost other places in Goa to install such innovative machines keeping in mind public’s health and hygiene.
