The robberies on the highway connecting to Goa – Mumbai, and Goa – Karnataka is not a new story. The robbers make us the of opportunity and loot the people on the highways. In the month of June Last, ear there was a news about the existence of a teenager gang, which was operating in the south Goa. This gang used to rob the people on Goa – Karnataka highway at Canacona. But after the news appeared in the media the gang members went underground.

Here, in this case, Akshay Desai from Kudal, Maharashtra, on a way back in his tempo, was attacked and robbed of Rs. 2.2 Lakh at Sao Jose de Areal on Wednesday night. According to the sources, the driver of the tempo has identified the person who robbed him for over 2 lakh rupees.

The tempo driver who is hailing from Kudal had identified the robber who is a Goan history sheeter named Augustine Carvalho who has a number of theft cases registered against him in the various police stations in Goa, said the sources.

According to the news published in the local daily, Akshay Deepak Dessai, who was driving the tempo, was waylaid by an unidentified person at Sao Jose de Areal on Wednesday and robbed him of Rs Rs 2.2 lakh in cash. Dessai, who had driven to Goa to deliver live poultry to a dealer at Quepem, was returning to Kudal when the incident occurred. Dessai, in his complaint to the police, had described the accused as “a bearded man with strong built and a wheatish complexion”.

“Based on the description provided by the complaint, we have identified him as Agostine Carvalho. He was involved in another case of theft recently and was released on bail. A number of offences stand against him,” police sources informed. The Goa police sources have said that they are confident of nabbing the accused soon. PSI Elvito Rodrigues is investigating the case.

It looks like, the major reason behind the rise of the crime in Goa, is an unemployment amongst the youth in the state. Most of the history sheeter are either uneducated and unemployed or partially educated but unemployed. We do not intend to justify the criminals but trying to put across our point of view looking at the recent cases.

Besides the education, most of the criminals also lack the basic moral and ethical values that are set by the society. There is a solid need of creation of the employment in the state rather than distributing the free laptops to the students which most of the time goes out of the use.
