FOLLOWING THE BAN ON ENTERING THE BEACH WATERS AFTER SUNSET, NOW THE GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED TO ROPE IN THE POLICE POLICE FORCE FOR CRACKING ON COOKING IN THE OPEN AREA BY DOMESTIC TOURISTS. ACCORDING TO THE SOURCES, THIS NEW DEVELOPMENT WILL LEAD TO REDUCE THE DISTURBANCE AND UNATTENDED GARBAGE PROBLEMS IN THE STATE.

A high-level meeting of the stakeholders of the tourism industry was held at the Paryatan Bhavan which was chaired by the Goa’s Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, and in the meeting, major decisions have been taken in regards to the safety and cleanliness on the Goan beaches.

As part of this initiative the tourism minister of Goa, Mr. Babu Azgaonkar had announced the ban on swimming on Goa’s beaches after sunset and he asked the police to take strict action on the tourists who cooks on the beaches or for that matter at any public places in the state.

According to the report published in the national daily Hindustan Times After announcing a ban on swimming on Goa’s beaches after sunset, in a meeting of tourism industry stakeholders, chaired by chief minister Manohar Parrikar, ordered police to crack down on cooking in public by domestic tourist groups, claiming it was unhygienic and resulted in garbage being strewn in public areas.

THE DOMESTIC TOURISTS GET ENGAGED IN DRINKING AND COOKING ON THE GOAN BEACHES

This meeting which was comprised of the representatives from state government agencies, as well as tourism, and travel industry stakeholders, took place inside the closed doors, and no media persons were allowed inside the room. After the meeting, the tourism minister spoke to reporters and mentioned that they have taken a decision on undertaking a massive awareness drive in the state to make tourists aware of the perils of swimming in the sea after sunset.

“Cooking in the open by groups of tourists is an eyesore. It creates disturbance and garbage which is left unattended. We have instructed police to crack down on groups of tourists who travel by buses and cooking gear and then cook in the open for their meals,” he said.

It has been observed that the domestic tourist traveling on buses or in their private vehicles comes to the state with shoestring budgets has absolutely no money to spend, and this also does not generate any revenue to the state. “Such tourists are regularly spotted along the coastal belts of Goa cooking their meals in the open thus causing inconvenience to others,” said the minister.

The cooking in open not only creates the inconvenience to others but it also leads into generating the excess garbage on the Goan beaches. “Such low-budget tourism doesn’t bring in revenue to the state exchequer and at the same time ruins the aesthetics of the countryside,” He added.

Mr. Azgaoknar also mentioned that he had received many complaints in this regards, and lately the state has also seen many deaths due to the swimming in the sea water after the sunset when there are no lifeguards present on the beaches. “The sooner this is stopped the better. We have received a lot of complaints,” Ajgaonkar said adding that the tourists’ department will be conducting the awareness drive in the state. “We will also conduct an awareness drive, where tourists will be given pamphlets asking them not swim after sunset. The pamphlet will be given to tourists at border check-points, at hotels, restaurants, and shacks,” Ajgaonkar said.

Goa, is one of the most sought after beach destination in the country that attracts nearly six million tourists in a year needs to be made safer for the tourists and the steps taken by the tourism minister and rest of the stake holders of the tourism industry will have wider and positive effect on the tourism industry of Goa.
