The counting of votes which began at around 9 am on the 11th in the north Goa with bad news for BJP as their former Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar lost the Mandrem seat to Dayanand Sopte of INC (Indian National Congress). The results were delayed in Goa compared to the other states like UP and Punjab.
As the day progressed the results started coming in and the picture started getting clearer. The Congress displayed unexpected victory this time with their dormant candidates started registering the victory from their respective constituencies. People gathered at the counting booth were seen shouting anti-BJP slogans. Many of the stalwarts of BJP were lost in this election. Following the Parsekar, another cabinet minister, Dilip Parulekar lost his seat to the Goa Forward candidate Jayesh Salgaonkar.
By afternoon the picture became more clear and the possibility of hung parliament started becoming the reality. Vinod Paliyekar of the Goa Forward opened an account by defeating the BJP’s legislature Dayanand Mandrekar in Siolim followed by, Goa Forward’s Jayesh Salgaonkar defeated BJP legislature and Tourism Minister Dilip Parulekar making the position of Goa Forward yet stronger. By 2 pm Goa forward had three seats in their account including the seat of their leader Vijay Sardesai in Fatorda.
Another shock came to BJP when their speaker Rajendra Arlekar lost his seat to the MGP candidate Babu Azgaonkar. Meanwhile, the Taleigao seat was retained by the Congress once more with the victory of Mrs. Jenifer Monserate. The AAP candidates from Taleigao had hardly managed to secure negligible numbers of votes.
The defeat of Babush Monserrate was the most shocking for his supporters since he lost against the sitting MLA of Panaji with hardly a small margin of votes which obviously snatched by the AAP candidate who scored around 1600 odd votes in this election. The dream of Babush making the city of Panaji a smart city looks like vanished with this defeat.
The independent and Others which includes MGP and GF would play the role of kingmakers in the government formation this time although none had opened their cards as yet but according to the sources, the talks have already begun. The BJP MLA Micheal D’mello quoted before the media that, Goa Forward convenor Vijay Sardesai had assured him personally the support of their party. Whether may be the quotes of speculations but the final formation of the government would be done only through the horse trading.
