Police had lathi-charged on protesting fishermen to disperse the crowd that was blocking the entire traffic on Bandodkar Road.

Goan traditional fishermen started the agitation against the unnatural way of fishing last week. On Wednesday, hundreds of fishermen came out on the roads protesting against the unnatural fishing. They also surrendered their fishnets, trawlers, and other equipment before the Fisheries Department in Panaji as well as in the south Goa. According to them, the unnatural fishing includes the use of LED lights, China engine, and Bull trawlers.

The situation turned violent on Thursday when the agitators tried to block the way of Fisheries department director Sharmila Monteiro. The protestors demanded an explanation from her in a harsh manner about her failure to resolve the issue. When police saw the is situation is going out of control they started handling the situation with little stiffness by pushing the protestors away from the way of the fisheries director. But the situation went out of the hands when protesters started misbehaving with the police personals by manhandling them. This led the police to start the lathi charge on the protestors.

Laxmikant Parsekar on the earlier occasion denied of any lathi charge taken place but looking at the people’s rage he finally took the decision to appoint an inquiry committee headed by the magistrate to get the transparent picture of the situation.

According to PTI, the delegation of Fishermen under the banner of Goencho Ramponakacho Ekvott met Parsekar on Saturday to put forward their various demands including a magisterial inquiry into Thursday’s alleged lathi charge. The fishermen claimed that the superintendent of police (North) Karthik Kashyap ordered the lathi charge without any provocation.

“The Chief Minister has assured us that he would order a magisterial inquiry into the entire incident and Kashyap’s role in it,” said Agnelo Fernandes, GRE president, afterward. While Parsekar had already received a preliminary report about the incident from the police, the magisterial inquiry would be completed within a month, Fernandes told PTI.

Chief Minister has assured the delegation that marine police and State Fisheries Department will crack down on the LED lights and high-speed trawlers with China-made engines, according to Fernandes. “If there is any violation of rules in the deep sea, Coast Guard has been instructed to take action,” Fernandes said, adding that the fishermen would not withdraw their ongoing strike till government acted on these promises.

After the lathi charge on Thursday, entire social media was filled with the images and the videos of the incident which displayed the clear picture of what exactly happened. It is not false that police did the lathi charge but there is another truth that even the agitators had assaulted the policemen.
