Yet in another development in the missing body case from GMC, the department has asked the intervention of the Crime Branch in this matter. Following the FIR at Agassaim Police station the case has been transferred to CID for the thorough investigation, said the sources. The body that was handed over to the CCP for disposal was of 24-year-old youth while the unclaimed body they were supposed to collect was of 45-year-old. This is either the utter carelessness or there is a possibility of foul play in it.

According to the reports, following the shocking incident of missing body of a 24-year-old Aldona youth, who died following the heart attack on the football ground a week back, the health minister had issued a suspension order of three doctors connected to the forensic department of GMC. According to the sources, they had handed over the body of an Aldona youth Januz Gonsalves to the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) for cremation instead of an unclaimed body of a 45year old man.

After this incident, the health minister Rane had ordered a thorough probe into the matter and stated that there will be a new introduction of electronic tagging for the dead bodies kept in GMC Mortuary to avoid the occurrence of such incidents in the future. Junior Rane said that he has now instructed the GMC authorities to introduce new electronic tagging for the bodies in the morgue. Rane also instructed that there should be CCTV installed in the morgue so that a similar incident is avoided. Only the unclaimed bodies will be tagged under this new electronic tagging system, said the sources.

Further, Rane went on to meet the family of the youth at their residence in Aldona and apologised for the blunder created by the forensic department of GMC. Assuring the family Rane said that he has requested the director of police, Muktesh Chander to move the case to the crime branch for further investigation.

After the sudden death of Gonsalves, 24 his body was kept at the GMC morgue which was later on handed over to the Corporation of the City of Panjim (CCP) to be cremated. The incident came to light when the family of the youth came to claim his body and the body was said to be missing.

Considering the seriousness of the case and to ensure a thorough and more professional investigation of the crime, the case was registered under section 153-A (b)IPC applied for any act prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony between different religions, racial, language or religious group or caste or community, with immediate for further investigation said Chander.

Chander has said that as the case has been registered and it has been moved to the crime branch, Rane with a heavy heart went to meet the youth’s mother, sister and other family members and told them that he had come there with his humble apologies for the insensitive attitude of the head of the department of forensic medicine Dr. Edmundo. Rane continued to say that even though it was him, on his path as the ministry of health it his duty to act against the crime.

Rane also announced that shortly an ambulance of 108 will be launched in memory of Januz at the primary health center (PHC), Aldona. He assured the Gonsalves family the facilities at the health center will be improved shortly. An emergency room similar that to Panjim, Sakhli and Canacona will also be opened up at the Aldona health center.

All this was going to be done in memory of their brother Januz, said Rane.’I have relived after meeting the family, I told them that they could contact me if anything was required or if things were not moving smoothly, added Rane. Assuring there would not be a repeat incident at the GMC.
