Salvador Fernandes alias Ghalu was brutally murdered by five youth on the Donapaula-Miramar highway, near the science center, on 26 August 2011 in the late evening. All the accused including one juvenile were arrested by the police. In the attack, Ghalu was seriously injured and went into the coma following his death after three days at GMC. The sources revealed that the attack was pre-planned and resulted out of the previous enmity. The four accused had the previous enmity with deceased which later resulted in the murder of Ghalu.

According to the sources, Ghalu was a hardened criminal and had several attempts to murder cases registered against him at the Panaji police station, including the deadly attack on Babani Shaikh in the year 2007 at Taleigao. Ghalu had also attacked Imtiyaz Shaikh in year 2006 at St. Inez with sharp weapons.

According to the sources, Salvador Fernandes alias Ghalu who was a history sheeter was assaulted with choppers by five accused Ashraf Shaikh, 18; Sandeep Shinde, 23; Krishna Naik, 21 and Godwin Mesquita, 18, all from St Cruz were later arrested by Panaji police and had been booked under section 302 of IPC. However, the police could not recover the weapons used in the attack from the accused. Ghalu went into Coma due to multiple injuries and later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at GMC.

According to the case of the prosecution, Ghalu was a history-sheeter and gangster of Taleigao. Ghalu had long-standing enmity with the four accused, Tatin Tigde, Sandeep Shinde, Krishna Naik and Godwin Mesquita. Following the existing enmity the four accused including one minor accused Ashraf Shaikh had attacked Ghalu on the late evening of 26 August 2011 with choppers. Ghalu had multiple wounds on all over his body which resulted due to the attack and he succumbed to his injuries on September 3, 2011 at GMC.

The counsel of accused Advocate Anup Kurtarkar told the media that, “According to our submission to the court, my clients were falsely implicated in this case and they are innocent. Both the eye witnesses were faulted in their cross-examination and could establish the case,” he said adding that “Basically both of them (eye witnesses) have claimed that they had seen the incident but their versions were contradictory to each other. Based on this court has not taken their witness into the consideration and given the benefit of doubt to the accused by acquitting them from the case.”

According to the sources, due to the lack of evidence which prosecution could not bring it to the records all the four accused were acquitted by the court. The case of fifth accused that was minor at the time of the incident is going on in the Juvenile court.
