The catching of fire in the garbage dump at Campal is not the new story at all. It is the recurring issue going on for quite some time and nobody is doing anything about it. The CCP (Corporation of City of Panaji) has set up the waste sorting center at Campal parade ground which is touching to the Dayanand Bandokar Road.

The Garbage Sorting Plant of CCP is situated right in the middle of the city and highly vulnerable to catching fire as it consists of the substances which help into the combusting. This scenario of catching fire is going on since 2012. According to one report published by the local newspaper on February 2015 with the headlines “A major fire had broken out at the Corporation of the City of Panaji’s (CCP) waste sorting center on the parade ground at Campal,” it took fire tenders around 2 hours and 12000 liters water of to extinguish the fire. The then fire tender officer S N Desai told the media that they are not aware of the exact reason behind the breaking out of the fire but it can be the work of some miscreants.

This time according to the sources, the fire extinguishing work is going on for almost seven days. Thick clouds of smoke making the life of people miserable in the vicinity, even the regular traffic is getting disrupt due to the smoke which is covering the road. It is not alone the smoke but the hazardous fumes coming out from the fire is said to be more dangerous for the people in the vicinity which is creating the health hazards.

The issue here is not who is lighting the fire, it may be some miscreants but it is the major health and traffic hazard. It is the responsibility of the CCP to take care of the garbage dumped by them into this place. People even want to know who has given the CCP authority to dump the garbage at Campal grounds. Goa Prism tried to get in touch with the Sanjit Rodrigues to find out what CCP is doing about it, but he did was not available to answer.

According to the sources, it is not the first time that so-called miscreants set the garbage on fire which is dumped on the Campal grounds. Once when the Libration day parade was in progress in the presence of Governor of Goa and the then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, someone set the garbage dump on fire and smoke covered the entire ground at that moment Parrikar promised the immediate action but nothing has happened till date.

Some residents from nearby area feel that it could be CCP people who are involved behind lighting the fire to destroy the garbage. The present fire officer S R Parriakar has told the media that the garbage needs to excavate to bring the control on the fire and the JCB excavator had been put to the task. Meanwhile, the efforts of the fire personnel had saved the fire getting on to the nearby electricity substation.

It is a very sad situation when the local MLA, CM, and CCP is claiming of converting the Panaji city into the smart city but the basic problems are yet to be sorted out. The situation of garbage is the major issue haunting the people of Panaji for many years. The major business hub of Goa Patto Plaza is dying due to the garbage stink. Until these problems are taken care of no smart city will come into the existence. Please do leave your honest comments and suggestions on this very serious issue.
