People seem to not take any cognizance of the rules of road safety and behave the way they feel right. Something similar has been witnessed at a Newly (Not Yet Officially Opened) built NH66 bypass road linking Char Rasta to Mashem in Canacona. This place has recently witnessed a rising number of road accidents. In one of the recent accident that took place on Tuesday, 2 two-wheelers collided against one another and both the riders have suffered serious injuries. This incident took place on the yet-to-be-commissioned NH66 bypass road, linking Char Rasta to Mashem.

Canacona police said that a scooter (GA-10-B-7220) ridden by Marina Fernandes a resident of Galgibaga collided with a moving motorcycle (GA-02-P-4336) ridden by Kusta Komarpant resident of Patnem when they reached at Galgibaga before noon on Tuesday.

Police informed that the motorcycle rider, Komarpant suffered a leg fracture while the scooter rider, Marina, sustained head injuries. Both were shifted to Hospicio hospital Margao after administering treatment at the Canacona Health Center.

The 7.4 km bypass road on NH66 which links Char Rasta to Mashem, once commissioned is expected to reduce the travel distance by 10 km as well as curb the number of accidents that take place there.

But off late, this stretch is witnessing frequent accidents, especially by two-wheelers, before it can even be opened to the public.

The work on this stretch is almost complete and will be inaugurated in a few weeks from now, but sadly the approach road from the Southern side has its share of controversy what with a local resident filing a PIL in a local court over the alleged illegal reclamation of land.

The road from Char Rasta till Galgibaga is complete with signboards being erected by the contractor and the road being open for two wheelers at the request of the residents residing on this route.

This 4 lane, 7.4 km stretch of road has its pros and cons as well.

The pros being the residents of Lolliem, Mashem, Galgibaga, Katebaga and Sadolxem now have a road which reduces the travelling distance by about 10 km and travel time by almost 20 minutes.

However the cons far overlook the pros. This road has gained notoriety for drug and liquor abuse and according to the locals, youngsters have been using the road to race about which has led to a few accidents, stated Diogo Da Silva a local resident from the area.

Just last month 2, two-wheelers collided head-on simultaneously on two cows who were squatting on this road at Galgibaga. Both the cows died on the spot with the impact while both riders and the pillions survived with minimal injuries.

According to experts, the road itself is built by adopting good road engineering and building practices but it is lacking good safety measures.

There are level crossings at 4 different places on this stretch of road, which is extremely dangerous and could lead to accidents if no corrective measures are taken.

“Before this beautiful road is thrown open for traffic, the authorities have to do an audit on how safe this road is otherwise lives are going to be lost” warned Pradeep Mokhardakar.
