The development of Mala area is underway from the time BJP government took over the governance in Goa. Ex-MLA and former chief minister Manohar Parrikar has promised clean and green mala to the people of Fontainhas the heritage vicinity of Panaji. Mala being the low-lying area always prone to get flooded during the rains to avoid this situation Mr. Parrikar in year 2014 October, had assured the people of Mala that government, on priority basis will undertake closing of the nearby Khazan land/ Manas through legal means, as well as re-opening and deepening of a channel, which has now been buried, so that the flooding in Mala area during monsoon would be substantially reduced.

Maintaining the legacy of Parrikar, current MLA Siddharth Kunkalienkar launched the project redevelopment of the Mala area. According to the news published by the loca daily in Goa The heritage are of Mala will get a complete facelift within one year with the civic amenities being re-looked at and revamped wherever needed.

‘Redevelopment of Mala’ project was launched on Tuesday by the Panaji MLA Siddharth Kunkalienkar in presence of CCP Mayor Shubham Chodankar. The project is one amongst the three which are being funded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation under the ‘Challenge Fund’ scheme. Kunkalienkar, thanking the Union ministry, said, “This project will improve the lifestyle of the people of Mala”. He further informed that the proposal was part of a national competition and was amongst the only three that would be granted the funds for redevelopment.
