According to the sources, the two-wheeler was in process of overtaking the tempo when it hit the bike on the National Highway (NH 17B) near Zuari Industries Limited at Zuarinagar, Goa.
Verna police arrested the tempo drive under the section of rash and negligent driving that resulted in killing two youth on the late Friday night. The names of the deceased are given as Steve Fernandes, 20 from Arossim who was riding the bike and Rolan Carvalho, 19, from New Vaddem Vasco was seating pillion.
According to the sources, the bike was proceeding in the same direction as tempo while the bike rider tried to overtake the truck had hit the front side of the tempo and fell on the road. The rider died instantly while the pillion rider Carvalho was declared brought dead after being taken to GMC (Goa Medical College).
According to the sources, the Tempo drive Mohanti Shide, 35 managed to escape from the scene after the accident took place but Verna police managed to arrest him on Saturday. Locals blame the government and authorities for not erecting the light poles on the highway. “This road goes to the airport and does not have proper lighting, many times accidents takes place due to the cattle that blocks the road. Even with the minimum speed, it is sometimes difficult to apply the break suddenly,” said one of the local residents who rushed to the accident spot after hearing the sound of the crash.
Who to be blamed here in this situation, the Truck driver or the two-wheeler rider who dashed against the tempo in process of overtaking? Do the authorities are responsible?
