SUNITA VERLEKAR WAS LOCKED IN THE DARK ROOM FOR 20 YEARS. SHE SPENT HER  YOUTH IN A MISERY. SHE WAS TREATED WORSE THAN AN ANIMALS BY HER OWN BROTHERS, AND NOW TO SAVE THEIR SKIN, THE ACCUSED BROTHERS HAVE TAKEN THE SUPPORT OF HER MENTAL HEALTH. POLICE INVESTIGATED THE MATTER AND ARRESTED BOTH THE BROTHERS AND THEIR WIVES. ALL THE ACCUSED HAVE BEEN BOOKED UNDER THE SECTION OF WRONGFUL CONFINEMENT….

How miserable someone’s life can become, this case is the live example of the same. Sunita was kept locked in the darkroom for nearly two decades, that means Sunita was sent into the confinement by her brothers when she was in her thirties. Today she was released from her confinement by the NGO Bailacho Saad who came to her rescue.

Sunita Verlekar, in her 50s, is in a miserable condition, and it is very hard to even imagine what she had gone through all these years sitting in a small dark room, where there was no toilet facility provided to her. When police rescued her, the urine was all around the floor, said the sources.

THE PORTION OF THE HOUSE WHERE SHE WAS CONFINED

The room she was confined into, is attached to the main house, where her brothers and their families live. This place is situated in the Goa’s famous tourist spot, Candolim, in North Goa. The brothers are now justifying their misdeeds by claiming that she was mentally ill, and they had no other option but to keep her in a room.

The convener of an NGO, Bailacho Saad, Sabina Martins has condemned the act of Sunita’s family saying it is inhuman treatment, and the victim was treated worse than an animal. “Regardless of the fact, if the woman is mentally unsound or not, she cannot be locked in the room, where she was not even allowed to use the toilet, and not given a bath for years. This is inhuman treatment and the culprits need to get punished.”

Meanwhile, the Women’s police wing in Panaji has confirmed that the FIR has been registered against victim’s brothers, and they have been placed under arrest following their interrogation by SP Karthik Kashyap.

SHE WAS FINALLY RESCUED BY AN NGO

Presently the victim is undergoing the treatment at GMC (Goa Medical College & Hospitals) Bambolim, and the reports will confirm if she is mentally unstable, and also if she has been physically tortured.

What do you think of this case? Do you think being mentally unfit anyone deserves such type of treatment? What type of punishment the accused deserves? Please do share your views on this serious issue.
