Rewarding someone for their favors is not the new thing in our country, and this is been happening since ages. The recent purchase of a huge piece of land belonging to Subhash Shirodkar by the Goa government at an exorbitant rate is considered to be a return of the favors by the political circle in Goa. The entry of Subhash Shirodkar is said to be directly connected with the land deal, claimed the sources. Lets us take a look at what exactly happened and how the deal went through.

According to the news report published by the local daily Heraldo, Shirodkar’s 1.83 lakh square meters of orchard land was acquired by the government in Shiroda for no particular purpose at 10 times the market price. The reports further say that although Mr. Shirodkar officially entered BJP a few days ago the deal was underway for a long time.

Earlier, this year there were reports of a land deal involving then Shiroda Congress MLA Subhash Shirodkar. Investigations reveal that the Goa government acquired 1,83,524 sq mts of orchard land in Shiroda from Shirodkar at a very exorbitant price of a Rs 70 crore, of which Rs 17 cr has already been transferred to the sellers.

Land acquisition by the government is always for a particular purpose, but here, the land is being acquired by Industries Department without having any plan in place for what purpose the acquired land would be used

While State BJP president Vinay Tendulkar said that not a single naya paisa was spent on induction of two leaders – Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte – into the party, investigations suggest that the exchequer paid a huge amount for orchard land belonging to Shirodkar, said the sources.

There is a high level of discontent amongst the BJP leaders due to the entry of Shirodkar and Sopte into the party, and some of them have come out openly against this move. The former CM of Goa, Mr. Laxmikant Parsekar had openly criticized the action of BJP claiming that he was not taken into the confidence about the decision by his own party men.

Meanwhile, when media put this question to the BJP State president Vinay Tendulkar, he only said “I am not in the government. I cannot comment on it.” On how he claimed not a single naya paisa was spent, Tendulkar replied, “I said the party did not spend any amount be it on their ticket to Delhi, hotel or bribe.”

Meanwhile, the new development of the huge amount paid from the already draining government treasury to Shirodkar’s orchard land has become the talk of the town. Sources reveal that the deal apparently was done with the blessings and connivance of the BJP’s top leadership.

The sources further revealed that Vedanta Real Estate Developers, owned by Shirodkar and his three brothers Amit, Umesh and Sattesh, had purchased this land on October 19, 2006, for a mere Rs 45 a square meter. What is now questionable is, why did the government acquire the same land for a very hefty price of Rs 3,500 per sq meter. The appreciation is huge and the special interest of the Goa Government into the same is more surprising.

The land which is purchased by the Industries Department with no specific purpose has no clues about why the land was acquired. “Land acquisition by the government is always for a particular purpose, but here, the land is being acquired by Industries Department without having any plan in place for what purpose the acquired land would be used,” said an official refusing to be named.

The story does not end here. There is the case of another landlord having a 1,40,650 Sq Mt of land which he offered to the same government for almost 10 times less cost i.e. Rs. 350/- per sqmt but the same was not accepted by the ruling government. The owner had produced a letter dated 5th April 2018 addressed to the Chief Secretary offered the government 1,40,650 sq mts of his land in Shiroda for Rs 350 an sq mt and a copy of that letter had been also sent to the Cabinet Advisory Committee comprising Ministers Sudin Dhavalikar, Francis D’Souza, and Vijai Sardesai, sources revealed. The question is why Rs 70 crore from the State exchequer is being hurriedly doled out to Shirodkar?

The politics run only on talking and the once who are good in the game wins game every time. There is no provision to find out or take out the truth from them. Media can only do the job of bringing the facts before the people and it is the people of Goa who needs to decide what is good for them and what is not.
