ROAD ACCIDENTS INCREASING TIME. THE MAJOR REASON BEHIND THESE ACCIDENTS IS SAID TO BE RASH AND NEGLIGENT DRIVING. IN ONE SUCH ROAD ACCIDENT FIVE PEOPLE WERE INJURED SERIOUSLY AND ONE LOST HIS LIFE…

The government was planning to install the speed governor on the tourist taxis but they protested saying that they (drivers) do not drive fast and blamed it on the private vehicles owners. In this case, the taxi driver drove the car in a rash, negligent manner, thereby injuring four people and leaving one dead.

The accident supposes to have taken place on Friday afternoon at Sancoale near Vasco da Gama. Based on the report published by the local daily The Navhind Times, the accident took place at around 12.30pm when a Tourist Vehicle (Maruti Swift Car) which was heading towards Cortalim from Vasco had dashed against a Hero Honda Passion motorcycle that was proceeding in the same direction.

The impact was so severe, that the two wheeler rammed into the compound nearby thus injuring the rider severely. The taxi did not station with that as they had been speeding up. It further rammed into Alto Car that had six occupants in it including an elderly couple, a young couple and their two children.

The sources said that with the impact of Maruti Swift Desire, a 65-year-old occupant of the Alto Car died on the spot while remaining three occupants received severe injuries. When police reached the accident spot, they saw the occupants of the Alto Car were trapped inside the vehicle due to the severe impact it had received.

The Vasco Traffic Cell PI Roy Pereira, police sub-inspector Razashad Shaikh, and IRB police constable Sagar Chauhan, who were deployed at Cortalim junction in order to monitor the traffic, immediately rushed to the site and shifted the injured to the Goa Medical College (GMC) and Hospital at Bambolim.

The name of the deceased is mentioned as Shivappa Ballat, a Native of Bagalkot in Karnataka. The sources said that other injured people who are undergoing treatment at GMC are yet to be recovered. Meanwhile the police did the panchanama at accident spot collected the available evidence.

The police are said to have arrested the driver of Maruti Swift, Shankar Lamanu for rash and negligent driving and thus causing the grievous injuries and death. Following the accident, the vehicular traffic was completely paralysed on the road. The Vasco Traffic Cell PI Pereira, police sub-inspector Shaikh and IRB police constable Chawhan monitored the traffic and later cleared the vehicles which met with the accident.

Meanwhile, there was a news of another accident on the same day evening on the four lane highway wherein the Speeding Innova car knocked down a cow on the road at Upasnagar. Here the issue of cattle creating menace in the streets has come up once again. It may be recalled that there are several accidents that have taken place due to cattle menace but at the same time, the issue of rash and negligent driving cannot be ruled out.

The reports say that due to street cattle menace, several accidents are reported on the four lane highway. The concerned authorities like panchayat and the municipal authorities have played the role of silent spectators by taking no steps to impound the stray cattle.

What is your take on this? Do you think that accidents are mainly taking place due to the speed (rash and negligent driving) are the cattle responsible for all the accidents take place in the state? please do leave your unbiased comments on this serious issue.
