Speed is the main cause of all the road accidents that takes place in the state, and across the country. But in spite of knowing this fact, people don’t change their habit of driving fast. In the bargain of reaching a few minutes earlier, some of them never reach their destination at all. After the accident, everyone starts blaming the road condition and traffic police, except to the person who is involved in the accident.
The case of the Cortalim accident is one such example of the same. According to the sources, the speeding tourist taxi coming from the opposite direction dashed against the two-wheeler killing the rider on the spot.
The two-wheeler bearing registration number GA-06-R-3011 was proceeding towards Cortalim from Vasco, and a tourists car bearing the registration number GA-06-T-2053 was heading towards the Vasco.
According to an eyewitness, the impact was so severe, that the two-wheeler rider Vasudev Sajal Gudda (22) died on the spot. “The Tourist Taxi driven by one Tanvir Shaikh was going towards Vasco in a very high speed and while overtaking the other car he hit the two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction,” said the eyewitness from Cortalim.
The accident supposes to have taken place in late night on Sunday. According to the sources, after hearing the sound resulted from the impact, the villagers came on the road and summoned the police.
Immediately on the receipt of information, the Vasco police reached the accident spot and arrested the accused Tanvir Shaikh for rash and negligent driving. The body of the deceased was sent for the post-mortem after the Panchanama said the sources.
Road accidents will not reduce the time people learn the traffic sense and start driving sensibly. The lack of severe punishment in such cases is another thing that gives encouragement to the offenders to break the rules on regular basis. The stringent law and severe punishment will be the only way to reduce the number of road accidents in the state. If the government can give a life sentence for cow slaughter, then why not similar punishment for the accidents causing deaths due to rash and negligent driving? Please do give your valuable feedback on this serious issue.
