Sulaksha was the living in Canacona along with her mother after the death of her husband and her body was found at Cuncolim forest on Tuesday in mysterious condition. Sulaksha was strangulated to death using her Duppatta.

Sainath Sawant, 26-year-old, a resident of Ambaulim, Quepem, works as a security guard at Mathany Saldana Administrative Complex. Addressing media persons on Thursday, SP (South) Ms. Chandan Chowdhary, said that Sawant resorted to killing Gaonkar as he was being pressurized by the victim to marry her. “The accused was known to the girl (Gaonkar) for nearly two years. The girl had been asking Sawant to marry her, but he was least interested in getting married to her, and therefore, wanted to eliminate her,” Chowdhary said.

The Accused narrated to police that he murdered the victim following the sequence of events.  According to South Goa SP Ms. Chawdhary, the accused picked up the victim Sulaksha Gaonkar from her house at Canacona on 17th January in the morning and later dropped her at Cuncolim, before the duo left for Margao again later in the day. After dropping Gaonkar near the Margao bus stand, Sawant went to report for work, before joining Gaonkar later that evening. From there, both went to Cuncolim and chose a secluded spot behind the industrial estate to spend some time together.

According to the sources, at Cuncolim forest, after spending some time with the victim the accused strangulated her using her Dupatta. Police managed to establish the identity of the deceased, based on the mobile phone and some bank slips found in a bag lying near the body. The accused has been remanded in police custody.

Most of the murder cases get solved with the help of modern forensic and digital technology. It may be quite possible that the accused may try to cheat the forensics or digital technology by planning the murder well in advance but the ever improving technology and knowledge base make the police system more powerful and it is very difficult to bypass that. However smart the criminal may be, but one thing he forgets that The Crime Never Pays.
