With the increase in the number of tourists visiting Goa each year, there is a concern about the cleanliness of the beautiful seashores across the State. Goa Tourism has taken the matter seriously as it recognizes and understands that every tourist is important and distinct which also means cleanliness is a priority for the State and the sector.
Ms. Pamela Mascarenhas, Deputy Director, Department ofTourism said, “We have contracted two agencies to cater to the cleanliness of our North and South Goa beaches. The contract begins today, 1st September where the initial work of placement of dustbins, building of compost pits, recruitment of manpower, purchasing vehicles, etc. is underway. This cleanliness drive is slated to be in full swing in 30 days with manpower, placement of bins, vehicles, etc. in place.”
The waste from the bins placed on the beaches will be collected on daily basis in addition to combing of wet and dry sand.Special arrangements will also be made to meet the intense demand of beaches after special events such as Ganpatiimmersion, Durga celebrations, beach weddings, film shootings or any other tourism related events to ensure complete cleanliness of the beach within 24 hours after the day of the event. The project will also ensure cleanliness of beaches from floating and other waste onto the beaches from tidal springs especially during the monsoons and high tides amongst others.
This will be an integrated system comprising cleaning of beaches through manual means wherever necessary, giving utmost priority to environment protection and pollution control of sand and water.
