Goa is already come into the news with the two recent cases of flesh trade in the city but now the news of child trafficking is also raising its head in Goa. The recent case of a mother selling her 5 daughters from Baina, the red light area of Goa, has brought the shocking surge I the state. According to the available information a major human trafficking racket has been busted in Biana at Vasco Da Gama, where the women sold her daughters for the money, reportedly the police have rescued three of them aged between 6 and 14 years.

According the police sources search for the remaining two children is underway; they also suspect that this is just a small part of the major human trafficking racket in Goa as there are reports of more women from the same locality selling their children. The accused woman and other who apparently have sold their children are said to be commercial sex workers from that area.

The story of child trafficking came into light due to the intervention of NGO, ARZ from Vasco, the representative of ARZ Mr. Arun narrated the story of child trafficking to Goa Prism over the phone. According the information provided by ARZ the 14 year old daughter of the accused woman was sexually assaulted by her step father for almost 5 years. The sexual exploitation of her started 5 years back in 2010. Initially she was forced to work as housemaid from where she was rescued by missionary nun during her field visit to Baina, the nun managed to admit her into the convent school, but she was soon dropped out of the school due to the financial problems.

When the ARZ managed to get in touch with victim girl she was in terrible condition, the NGO took her to medical checkup and it was revealed then that she has been sexually exploited, after the through counseling the girl disclosed them about her sexual exploitation by her step-father for the period of 5 years against her wish and with the consent of her mother. She also disclosed that her mother sold her 5 siblings for the money. The NGO immediately lodged the complaint against her mother and father in the Women’s police station at Panaji.

The police immediately arrested the stepfather and the mother. The stepfather is engaged in furniture polishing jobs while the mother is a daily-wage worker.  The family is a native of Karnataka and now resides at Baina in Goa. Police said that on interrogation both the accused confessed to the crime. The mother, in her statement to the police, said that she gave birth to two girls and they were later put up for adoption. She added that she received 10,000 for one the infants. Police has produced both the accused before the judicial magistrate first class and the accused have been remanded to police custody.
